To date White Heat remains the only instance in which my first encounter with an actor instantly turned me into fan. Typically for me I become a fan of a performer over a period of time and after seeing a number of their films. Not James Cagney though. The scene early during White Heat in which Cody Jarrett gets a headache and needs to be comforted by his mother, my instant reaction was, “I need... read more

White Heat was on my "to watch" list for quite a long time. When I finally got round to watching it, I wasn't disappointed with it at all. In all fairness, I wouldn't call myself a big fan of gangster films but this one gripped me from start to finish. Personally, I think that every single gangster film before the release of The Godfather in 1972 is underrated. None of them have received half as w... read more

Movies the giraffe watched in 2017: May (28 movies items)

"First viewing - May 13th I decided to have a classic crime double feature at home by pairing this with Bonnie & Clyde, and they definitely complemented each other well. White Heat lived up to its reputation with the stellar performance from James Cagney & a compelling story. I didn't fall in love with the movie, but definitely enjoyed it & would be willing to watch it again at some point. I can see why it's considered great but for me personally it fell just short of reaching that status."

Moviewatcher122's 2016 Film Diary: December (11 movies items)

"December 2 "You wouldn't kill me in cold blood, would ya?" "No, I'll let ya warm up a little." I haven't seen many of these classic gangster films, but this one was fantastic. James Cagney delivers a great performance and every scene in here is great and memorable. I loved this movie and it's one of the best classic gangster movies so far."

PopMatter's Essential Film Performances - 2010 (50 movies items)

"THE DARK SIDE Margaret Wycherly An unknown actor, then as now, Margaret Wycherly provides the crucial pillar in the 1949 gangster/noir classic White Heat. For a film that is as much about mummy issues as it is about nihilism and violence, James Cagney’s old dear has to be that perfect combination of domineering and doting, gentle and insistent. Wycherly (whose only other notable gig had been playing Gary Cooper’s Mum in Sergeant York eight years previously) achieves this careful balance, app"
