Film Journal 2014 (195 movies items)

"11/7 Werckmeister Harmonies is a film about complacency. It is like a father, asking "Why did you fail?". But the father doesn't ask you but instead himself in the mirror, covering in shame as you secretly watch from the sidelines. "Why did you give up?" "Why did you fall into this life?" And these aren't even questions loaded with a sense of guilt or certainly not anger. They're questions intended to create an understanding of a philosophical statement that has already formed in the head of th"

" The sky darkens, then goes all dark. The dogs howl, rabbits hunch down, the deer run in panic, run, stampede in fright. And in this awful, incomprehensible dusk, even the birds... the birds too are confused and go to roost. And then... Complete silence. Everything that lives is still."

"07.08. DVD, 1st viewing DIRECTED BY Béla Tarr I liked it which was very disappointing as I expected it to be earth-shattering. Partly, it was that - the direction and cinematography is quite impeccable during something like the hospital raid or the opening scene. The post-rockish score is beautiful, too. It's just that the glorious moments didn't comprise a satisfying whole. I found a lot of the scenes almost completely unnecessary and almost art-house parodying. Two-minute face close-up shot"

"One of the most incredible, powerful, mesmerizing films I have ever seen. Béla Tarr paints a picture of a small, desolate town, otherworldly in quality, that is slowly, devastatingly turned upside down by the power of intrusion and moral corruption. It formulates a portrait of humanity, in all its dissolution and repressive flaws. The film is generally composed of just a few tracking shots, sprawling for nearly two and a half hours. It is this technique of perpetual creeping that, along with it"
