War of the Worlds (2005)

Pretty crud. Not much else to say about this one. Poor acting by Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning annoyys the hell out of me sometimes. I mean couldn't they have chosen someone else?? All she does for the whole movie is scream and perhaps says a few lines ..but mostly she just screams.

As a big fan of both the original book and even the musical score, I found myself highly disappointed by this film. I knew I was in trouble from the off, when I realised that it wasn't even set in England. Ok, I thought, England always gets overlooked for hollywood adaptations, but maybe it will still be ok. But no. Aside from all of the flaws mentioned in a previous review, I was utterly astonished to find that these aliens were transported to earth into pre-built tripod machines. What a ridiculous concept! One of the main themes of the book is how life on Earth continued as normal whilst the alien race went about slowly building their killing machines. Hollywood Blockbusters like this are main reason why I find myself looking more for independent releases. This movie had so much potential because it had an excellent book to back it as well as Spielberg, but two things ruined it: Tom Cruise, and major plot holes. -Why did camcorder still work after electo-magnetic blast took out everything else? -How come only Tom Cruise's mechanic (and entire army) are only people that knew how to fix cars after the electro-magnetic blast? -Why do people run in straight lines down the road when being chased by alien spider-bots? -How come a crashed airliner managed to take out the entire neighborhood, but the holy minivan didnt even get a scratch? -The world is ending, everyone you know is dead, so why is everyone walking calmly in large groups ...Read more
