Wake In Fright is an early Ozploitation curiosity piece that feels more like a drug movie (in this case the drug being alcohol, and lots of it!) than the Outback thriller that the title and poster suggests. The main character (looking like an Aussie version of Thomas Jane) is on holiday from his job as a school teacher and one beer and a little gambling sends him down the rabbit hole of Outbacklan... read more

To be perfectly honest, I found "Wake in Fright," the chronicle of a man's financial and spiritual ruin in the outback of Australia, to be dull, uninvolving, and rather obvious. Maybe the reason it didn't engross me as much as I expected it to was that I expected an entirely different movie. Looking forward to an exciting, entertaining, and well-made rural thriller, I was instead subjected to a VE... read more

Description: Wake in Fright is the story of John Grant, a bonded teacher who arrives in the rough outback mining town of Bundanyabba planning to stay overnight before catching the plane to Sydney. But his one night stretches to five and he plunges headlong toward his own destruction. When the alcohol-induced mist lifts, the educated John Grant is ... (more)

The main character (looking like an Aussie version of Thomas Jane) is on holiday from his job as a school teacher and one beer and a little gambling sends him down the rabbit hole of Outbackland. Soon enough he's getting wasted with the locals, murdering defenseless kangaroos, and rolling around on the floor with Donald Pleasence. None of which is safe nor very attractive. There's not much of a plot really, and you only keep watching to see what can happen next. It's a strange journey and at times you have no idea where it will take you. In terms of similar films, I thought of Straw Dog” read more

Less Involving Than I Had Hoped

“To be perfectly honest, I found "Wake in Fright," the chronicle of a man's financial and spiritual ruin in the outback of Australia, to be dull, uninvolving, and rather obvious. Maybe the reason it didn't engross me as much as I expected it to was that I expected an entirely different movie. Looking forward to an exciting, entertaining, and well-made rural thriller, I was instead subjected to a VERY slow-paced and uneventful movie with lots of animal killings that shocked and sickened me.

Now, I often love slow-paced movies, so I wonder if I simply watched it at the wrong time. But to enjoy a slow movie I have to have have characters that hold my interest, that I like and relate to in some way. The characters in "Wake in Fright" were fairly well-defined, but not likable nor part” read more

Amazing Underrated Obscure Bizarre Films PART 1 (50 movies items)

"A phenomenal Australian film with one incredible sequence, shot, character, etc. after another plus Donald Pleasance showing up as an alcoholic outback doctor. Considered by many to be the best film to come from Down Under. A true masterpiece of unknown filmmaking. "
