Less Involving Than I Had Hoped

6 months, 1 week ago at Jan 24 19:45
To be perfectly honest, I found "Wake in Fright," the chronicle of a man's financial and spiritual ruin in the outback of Australia, to be dull, uninvolving, and rather obvious. Maybe the reason it didn't engross me as much as I expected it to was that I expected an entirely different movie. Looking forward to an exciting, entertaining, and well-made rural thriller, I was instead subjected to a VE... read more

Wake In Fright is an early Ozploitation curiosity piece that feels more like a drug movie (in this case the drug being alcohol, and lots of it!) than the Outback thriller that the title and poster suggests. The main character (looking like an Aussie version of Thomas Jane) is on holiday from his job as a school teacher and one beer and a little gambling sends him down the rabbit hole of Outbacklan... read more

"First viewing - July 29th Recommended by djprojexion Wake in Fright first caught my attention when Drafthouse Films announced they were distributing it & saving it from oblivion. And while I personally wouldn't call it a Great movie, it's interesting and different enough that I'm glad it was saved. The acting is so well-done that the characters have a lived-in, true-to-life feel about them. There's not much of a plot really, as we merely follow Gary Bond's character through a holiday vacation "

The main character (looking like an Aussie version of Thomas Jane) is on holiday from his job as a school teacher and one beer and a little gambling sends him down the rabbit hole of Outbackland. Soon enough he's getting wasted with the locals, murdering defenseless kangaroos, and rolling around on the floor with Donald Pleasence. None of which is safe nor very attractive. There's not much of a plot really, and you only keep watching to see what can happen next. It's a strange journey and at times you have no idea where it will take you. In terms of similar films, I thought of Straw Dog” read more

My Tedious and Asinine 2014 Movie Diary (76 movies items)

" This is probably one of the strangest and most unconventional films I've ever seen. A snobby schoolteacher in the Australian outback goes on vacation to an adjoining town and encounters a variety of boozing lowlifes, and after a few nights of crazed drinking, he becomes just like them. Wake in Fright isn't a horror film in the average sense of the word; it's more of an existential rumination on life in rural Australia. There is some despicable animal cruelty against kangaroos in a cringe-wo"

Maybe the reason it didn't engross me as much as I expected it to was that I expected an entirely different movie. Looking forward to an exciting, entertaining, and well-made rural thriller, I was instead subjected to a VERY slow-paced and uneventful movie with lots of animal killings that shocked and sickened me.

Now, I often love slow-paced movies, so I wonder if I simply watched it at the wrong time. But to enjoy a slow movie I have to have have characters that hold my interest, that I like and relate to in some way. The characters in "Wake in Fright" were fairly well-defined, but not likable nor part” read more

"A bored & disgruntled small town school teacher decides to spend his Christmas vacation in the big city of Sidney. Midway through the journey however, he finds himself stuck in another small town the locals call "The Yabba". Though it might as well be named "Hades" considering that he soon finds himself slowly descending into his own personal drink-binging, kangaroo-killing, bar-brawling hell. A tale from down under that goes even further down under. In short, Yuletide holly-day, the outback w"
