A film by Mr. Pretentious

Cries and Whispers is far too pretentious too be taken seriously. The fact that Ingmar Bergman is still regarded as a masterful director is one of those big mysteries in cinema. Sadly Bergman's films spanned during the 50's all the way up to the 80's, shame, as Bergman could have really made it into today's generation; with its silly emotional silliness, confronting life's many many flaws, but I'm... read more

Since this is commonly considered one of Bergman's greatest works and since I'm a huge fan of his, I thought I'd eventually check it out, and I was really in the mood so I watched it. Personally, I think I was a tad dissapointed, but nonetheless it remains a remarkable film. Personally, I think I was a tad dissapointed, but nonetheless it remains a remarkable film. The acting was top-notch and it truly felt human, and Bergman's direction was incredible and his use of colors and sound effects was pretty brilliant. The story was equally as effective, as were the characters; both offered suppressed and almost a disturbing type of suppressed tension. It made the entire film thoroughly depressing and totally heart-breaking.

However, there were some dull and even seemingly pointless scenes here and there, so it felt, mostly towards the beginning. Also, the aforementioned "sup” read more

Is this a review of the film or just a recap of your immature disdain for Bergman?

This is just a film for artsies, I wouldn't watch it.

Utter pretentious garbage.” read more

Movie Diary - January 2013 (11 movies items)

"OmU - Swedish with English subtitles Ingmar Bergmann created with Cries and Whispers again a greatly tense and strange atmosphere. There are just a few moviemakers who manage to make their movies like that. It fascinated me how Bergmann accomplished the colour red as golden thread (I'm a little bit disappointed I'm not writing in German now, because the idiom "golden thread" means literally translated: red thread. That would've been a great play of words ;) )."
