"This is one of his most aesthetically and emotionally beautiful films he ever made. It's black and white on purpose because that way shadows and lighting looks best. Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard" influenced Fassbinder when he decided to make this film but I think they are both equally memorable masterpieces."
