I was pretty nervous about checking this one out. I liked the idea of a war movie with sharks, but with Nicolas Cage as the lead and Mario Van Peebles helming the project I wasn't impressed. I don't have a problem with Van Peebles other than the fact that his movies are usually more amusing rather than emotional and intense. There are bits of the cast that were interesting to see involved and othe... read more

A lacklustre DTV cheapie

The real-life story of the USS Indianapolis, a warship that sank during World War II in shark-infested waters after a top-secret mission, is a no-brainer for a movie adaptation, particularly in the shadow of WWII movies like Fury and Hacksaw Ridge. It was actually given the telemovie treatment all the way back in 1991 with Mission of the Shark, but 2016's USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage endeavour... read more

"This story deserved so much better, I was actually looking forward seeing this after watching the documentary where the survivors tell their tale. But seeing the trailer dropped the expectations quite a lot but after this popped up on Netflix I decided to give the film a change. The quality of this film is just really awful. The CGI is worse than in the Asulym/SyFy garbage films. After the ship sunks the movie turns into one those films with Sharknado sharks killing people. Only character death "

A lacklustre DTV cheapie

It was actually given the telemovie treatment all the way back in 1991 with Mission of the Shark, but 2016's USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage endeavours to tell the story with the aid of contemporary special effects. Alas, in the hands of director Mario Van Peebles, the end result is nothing but a direct-to-video cheapie which looks downright pathetic alongside other recent war movies. Men of Courage wants to be a profound historical document, but Peebles and his team lack the talent to tell this haunting true story with any real weight - instea” read more

I don't have a problem with Van Peebles other than the fact that his movies are usually more amusing rather than emotional and intense. There are bits of the cast that were interesting to see involved and others that were kind of silly. I've never seen anything from the writers, but I have heard of one of their other films. Anyways let's see if they can pull this off.

Yeah no that was a waste of a good story. The fact that some of the actors had family who were on the Indianapolis is a shame. They really should apologize to their families for being in this. I mean don't get me wrong there wer” read more

My Movie Diary 2017 (217 movies items)

"18 January. The USS Indianapolis tragedy is one of WW2's worst, and definitely one of the most harrowing tales of survival. The ship has its share of battles, it delivered the atomic bomb, and is the best case study on the feeding habits of tiger sharks. It is a ship with history written all over. And it doesn't deserve this film. The CG special effects are brutally bad, the performances third-rate, and the storytelling uninspiring.  "
