A melancholy movie about a lonely pensioner struggling to survive in a pre WWII Italy with only his dog Flike to keep him company.
The use of real people (non actors) gave the film an authentic feel.
A great sentimental movie about growing old and loneliness.
Scenes with Flike the Miniature Fox Terrier are great.

A scene filmed at the Piazza del Popolo...Umberto D S... read more

My grandpa had a dog named Flike and I recently discovered that it was in homage to the movie. Some scenes sure moved me to tears.

" It's as devastating as Bicycle Thieves, and it's also every bit as great at being both beautiful and sad at the same time. I admit to sometimes having a difficult time with movies that are evidently dated, which is why, when it comes to something that was released in 1952, it's inevitable that I'm gonna prefer something as timeless as Umberto D, which treats the themes of hope(lessness) and economic strife in ways that are equally affecting to someone living in 2013, at least to me.
