"Fill your hands, you son of a bitch!"

Is there another American actor more iconic and legendary than John Wayne?

True Grit is one of the most quintessential Westerns in filmic history. It features memorable quotes, beautiful open vistas, classic shootouts and of course one of the greatest stars of all time. Whenever The Duke's commanding figure wandered into the fram... read more

Ok, first of all, I am going to confess that I needed to see this soon because the Coen remake is coming out very soon and I just needed to see the original version first and, quite frankly, I am really glad that I did because I am not entirely sure that I can see the Coen version beating this one (as awesome as they are). I am not really a big fan of western films because I always feel that they ... read more

After Frank Ross (John Pickard) is murdered in October 1880 by his hired hand, Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey), in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Ross' 14-year-old daughter Mattie (Kim Darby) travels to Fort Smith and hires the aging U.S. Marshal Reuben "Rooster" J. Cogburn (John Wayne). Mattie has heard that, despite his vices and missing eye, Cogburn has "true grit". She gives Rooster a down payment to track dow... read more

Description: Oscar winning performance by John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, the one-eyed, eye-patched Deputy Marshal who helps a stubborn, yet resourceful, teenage girl find the murderer of her father. A pure western in which a lawmen tracks a criminal, TRUE GRIT, based on Charles Portis' novel, reunited John Wayne with director Henry Hathaway (THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER). Wayne is crotchety U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, who would rather stay home than chase criminals. He heeds the call, though, when fourteen year-old Mattie Ross (Kim Darby) calls on him to avenge her father's death at the hands of a man who has escaped into Indian territory. G ... (more)

Moviewatcher122's 2015 Film Diary: December (57 movies items)

"December 24 "Boots, I got Hayes and some youngster outside with Moon and Quincy. I want you to bury 'em for me. I'm in a hurry." "They're dead?" "Well, I wouldn't want you to bury 'em if they wasn't." This was a pretty good movie, but I had a hard time thinking about this movie without thinking of the Coen Brother's remake. I still liked how the story was told and John Wayne was good as Rooster Cogburn, but I just can't help and think about how much the remake improved upon the original espe"

“Hathaway arrives with pal Duke to fordian or hawksian domains. The charge of the heavy Duke against the band of Robert Duvall is pure anthology, even when Kim Darby names what we see: "that's true grit". A realist ans tender depiction of west. Love tha hanging scene near the beginning.” read more

True Grit

“Star vehicles rely chiefly upon the success or failure of the material to take the persona of the star and twist it into a new shape. On these merits alone, True Grit is a resounding success. But taken as a complete work of film artistry, it doesn’t prove itself to be entirely successful. Yet for all of its problems, it’s not hard to see why The Duke finally won that elusive Oscar for his performance as the drunken rascal Rooster Cogburn.

We could sit here all day and argue over and over again whether or not his Oscar for Best Actor was a career achievement-in-disguise or won based on pure merit. It’s not hard to imagine a successful argument being made for his overlooked work in Red River or The Searchers as being more worthy of posterities value of what Wayne’s best pe” read more

1969 Films Ranked (6 movies items)

"This is a great old-time western, but it does alter the story significantly in order to make John Wayne the focus, and also I thought Kim Darby was way too old to play a convincing Mattie."
