“I thoroughly enjoyed 'True Grit', I thought it a convincing and highly characterful modern western. So many modern films lack the joy found in great dialogue and the eccentricity of the human spirit, in their best movies the Cohen Brothers bring such ingredients in spades. 'True Grit' does not glamorize nor stylise the western genre nor its era, it is an honest retelling of the original source focussing more on Charles Portis’ 1968 novel than the famous John Wayne vehicle, albeit with a good dose of The Cohen’s trademark dark humour. There is much warmth to it too, each character highly memorable, the acting superb throughout. Hailee Steinfeld who was thirteen at the time is exceptional as the highly wilful Mattie Ross, her determination to get revenge on the man who killed her fath” read more
