As hard as it may be for some to believe, there were films about the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic prior to James Cameron's 1997 Academy Award winner. These films have taken different points of view of the disaster, with some closely adhering to the factual record (1958's A Night to Remember) and others using the sinking of the ship as an secondar... read more

"Titanic," which struck an iceberg April 15, 1912, and sank on its maiden voyage, killing over 1500 people. Only 712 of the passengers, using 19 lifeboats, survived. There were a number of famous people traveling on the ship who died, among them, John Jacob Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim. Taking a personal approach, the film focuses on the Sturges, a family traveling on the luxury liner. Julia Sturges had booked passage on the ship with her two children after leaving her husband, Richard. He, however, discovered her plans, and followed her on board. Once they set sail, Richard never allowed Julia out of his sight, and unsuccessfully begged for a reconciliation. But then the Titanic hit that deadly iceberg, and the Sturges had to set their differences aside... for the sake of themselves and their children.
An unhappily married couple boards the Titanic, while one of their daughters falls in love with a boy from the underclass. But these problems seem small once the iceberg comes along. Academy Award Nominations: 2. Academy Awards: Best Story and Screenplay.
The movie was filmed without a background score to add to the authenticity. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, it ripped open the ship's bottom; over 1500 passengers died in the tragedy. According to the film, as the ship was going down, the passengers left on board were singing the Welsh hymn, "Nearer My God to Thee."

Jean Negulesco's 1953 version of Titanic falls into the latter category. Yet, it's hard to judge 1953's Titanic after viewing the 1997 version since Cameron's gem represented a perfect marriage of the ship's luxury, the disaster, and an affecting melodrama worthy of the ship's undying legend. While Negulesco's rendering has its moments and features a ” read more
