A very good movie

1 year, 5 months ago at Mar 7 8:53
Since I kept hearing good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out and the fact that I always enjoyed Sydney Pollack's work made made me even more eager. Actually, it had been a while since I saw one of his movies but this one really blew me away and it is definitely one of his best efforts. I mean, I knew beforehand that it was dealing with a dance marathon but I thought those ... read more

Most of them had been brought up to believe that if you worked hard and well, and otherwise behaved yourself, good fortune would be your fate. Yet during the Depression, failure, want, and defeat vis ... (more)

Film Diary - April 2013 (41 movies items)

" TV (RECORDED) / REWATCH Date watched: 12th/13th April, 2013 (late night) Project: Classics? Why?: Jane Fonda Director: Sydney Pollack Thoughts: Turns out I had seen this, just not for years. I had forgotten. As soon as I saw the beach in the opening scenes I remembered. One of those films that it is certainly worth watching, not sure why though.... Watch again?: Not especially. "

A very good movie

“Since I kept hearing good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out and the fact that I always enjoyed Sydney Pollack's work made made me even more eager. Actually, it had been a while since I saw one of his movies but this one really blew me away and it is definitely one of his best efforts. I mean, I knew beforehand that it was dealing with a dance marathon but I thought those events lasted about 2 or 3 days but, in fact, apparently, those marathons lasted weeks, even months! As a result, you see the contestants undergoing some kind of physical and mental meltdown and it was seriously quite distressing to watch this amount of human dispair. Furthermore, even though the ending was a little bit predictable, I thought they would find a way to revert the course of those eve” read more

Movies I finally got Around to Watching (10 movies items)

" I remember when this movie debuted. It garnered a lot of critical acclaim, as well as about nine Academy Award nominations. All I remember is wondering about the unusual title. I was not curious enough to go see it, however. Years later, I read that it was about the old dance marathons they used to have back in the 1930's. I recently found a site online where I could stream it for free and decided to check it out and see for myself what all the fuss was about. As I had heard, this is th"

Dear Cinema Diary - Vol 3 E4 - April 2012 (63 movies items)

" Maybe it's just the whole world is like central casting. They got it all rigged before you ever show up. Well, my movie watching for the month was heading down a dark road... might as well watch one of the most depressing films of all time. This is a jaded and harsh film. It does use some flashback/flashforward and other montage techniques to tell the story. However, not quite as abstract as "A Midnight Cowboy". For the month it pairs well with "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" so"
