Rousing, thought-provoking sci-fi actioner

"I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."

Although director John Carpenter masterminded a number of cinematic gems during the 1980s, They Live is arguably his coolest and most enjoyable effort from the decade. Written by Carpenter himself, it's a delightful sci-fi action romp, bolstered by an astute screenplay which mixes social commentary, exc... read more

They Live is another cult favourite from sci-fi supremo John Carpenter. Based on the short story Eight O’Clock in the Morning by Ray Nelson, They Live follows a homeless labourer who has drifted into Los Angeles in the search for work.

Set in a future where the divide between the rich and the poor is exacerbating at an extraordinary rate, unemployment and homelessness are common p... read more

Cheesy But Fun

"They Live" is cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, Brie Cheese, topped by a great terrible performance by pro wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as the unnamed shotgun-toting protagonist. "I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum." Yes you are, Rowdy, and never has such a line, so daringly uttered, struck such fear into the hearts into cadaver-faced extra-terrestrials as this.read more

" Date: 10/19/2018 Viewed: Blu-Ray Re-watch Note: This movie keeps on better and better with viewing. The story, characters and the social commentary are top notch. This movie may look cheesy when it's not. One of the movie's theme is the more things change, the more they stay the same. This movie is timeless. Highly recommended! "

" 'They Live' was so cool! Roddy Piper does this amazing job of making us believe he's actually seeing aliens through these sunglasses. He's so non-chalant and natural the whole time. Yeah, the aliens are kind of goofy mask people with bad makeup, but he is so adamant about them being real, you just go along with it. Sure, I'll bite. The way it ended was semi-surprising as well. I'll definitely see this again in the future."

"John Carpenter's underrated cult classic has Roddy Piper as a drifter who finds himself facing aliens that he can see when using a special pair of sunglasses. Carpenter's fun sci-fi action picture has plenty of set pieces and some off-the-wall one-liners like the now infamous "I came to chew bubble gum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubble gum!" Piper is ably supported by David Keith and their epic fight sequence has gone down in cult cinema history as one of the best."

"9.6 (uusintakatselu) Carpenterin kapitalistinen kannanotto lyö toisellakin katselukerralla Reaganin konservatiiviselta juppiyhteiskunnalta jauhot kurkkuun. Mielipide ei ole muuttunut ensimmäisestä kerrasta lainkaan, mutta vanhempana ja viisaampana ymmärsin entistä enemmän elokuvan pointin. Mustavalkoestetiikka on suora kunnianosoitus 50-luvun B-luokan kauhuelokuville, joiden parissa Carpenter varttui. Kohtaus, jossa Roddy Piper ja Keith David tappelevat kujalla kuvaa sitä, miten työväe"

" Great homage to old style 1950s science fiction that is sweetened with solid political commentary and an exciting paranoid atmosphere about hidden messages in daily life that no people can see but we are controlled by. It actually feels more believable today even if it is an "alien invasion" film as it could as easily be about capitalistic powers. Roddy Piper do probably the best acting I have ever seen from an ex-wrestler and the long dirty knuckle fight he has with Keith David seem to go on "
