An average movie

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Sydney Lumet’s work, I still wanted to check it out. Honestly, I have never been a huge fan of the genre but it is probably one of the worst musicals I have ever seen. At the time, it was the most expensive film musical ever made but it turned out to be a flop and it was universally panned when it was rele... read more

The Wiz

A musical seems like an absolutely odd choice for a director like Sidney Lumet, a director that was preoccupied with grit and realism. But that eye towards grit and realism made for a unique collaboration with The Wiz, which creates an imagined, fanciful New York, a New York in which graffiti comes alive and dances, and the yellow brick road extends from Harlem to Manhattan and beyond. And the fil... read more

Description: Dorothy, a twenty-four-year-old kindergarten teacher born, raised, and still working in Harlem, is celebrating Thanksgiving with her extended family, but she doesn't seem to be thankful for much in life. She lives a self-imposed sheltered life; she is shy and unfulfilled. Things change for her when she is caught in a snowstorm while chasing after her dog, Toto. They are transported to the mysterious Land of Oz, where she is informed that the only possible way to find her way back home is through the assistance of the powerful wizard in the Emerald City. As she goes searching for him, she befriends some creatures who are facing p ... (more)

A Quick Look at the Blaxploitation Genre (17 movies items)

"- This counts right? - Easy on down, easy on down the roooooaaaddd - I actually watched this one before THE Wizard of Oz. Took me a couple of years to try out the original though. No more explanation is needed. - Man, Sidney fuckin' Lumet directed this. I'm glad he did. And I'm glad that we didn't need parallel universes for this and Return to Oz to exist. - When I think of kitsch, this is what comes to my mind. If you like the artists involved, why not?"
