Beautiful but smug

The cinematography is brilliant, and so vivid you almost forget you are watching a black & white movie. It's been well preserved and looks as if it could have been released yesterday. And the locales were so interesting that Vienna seems like another character (whether it was shot there or not). But maybe today's audiences are just too smart, but I never trusted anything or anyone, so any shock... read more

This film was a really good film-noir film. It is a really tense film because of the chemistry between the characters and the way this film is filmed. It made me feel really great because I never realised at first of how awesome this film really is. It is one of those films that is really loved because of its absolutely outstanding cast especially because Orson Welles is in it. This film is about ... read more

Wasn't quite enjoying this movie and I was just wondering what made people rate this movie more than 8. I was about it give it just a six star rating but again the last scene, may be just 5 last seconds of the movie made me give one more star.

I love these kind of movies that has such an unpredictable endings. Didn't love the whole movie but the last, of course.

An out of work pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins, arrives in a post war Vienna divided into sectors by the victorious allies, and where a shortage of supplies has lead to a flourishing black market. He arrives at the invitation of an ex-school friend, Harry Lime, who has offered him a job, only to discover that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident. From talking to Lime's friends and associates Martins soon notices that some of the stories are inconsistent, and determines to discover what really happened to Harry Lime.

"Carol Reed's haunting 1949 mystery has too many iconic parts to mention plus a sardonic turn by Orson Welles as a man presumed dead."

" Where: At Home, Netflix Instant Thoughts: Wow! I loved this movie. I didn't remember just from the title that this was considered a classic, though I figured if Orson Welles was involved there might be a worthwhile movie to spend time on while I was stuck in bed sick all day. I am glad I did because this movie was fantastic. I was so impressed at the cinematography, beautiful high contrast shots and framing and silhouettes, it really reminded me of those days in college when I'd watch 2-3 f"

Movies the giraffe watched in 2017: February (18 movies items)

"First viewing - Feb. 9th When I noticed Netflix finally brought this on board I was excited because it meant I could finally watch it, and I've been curious to do so in recent years as I've become more aware of the high regard the film is held in. And I will say it's classic status is well-deserved. The camera work is very impressive, the story is compelling, the characters are well portrayed, and the music complements the film perfectly. Orson Welles has been in other films I prefer over this "

ALL-TIME 100 Revisited (20 movies items)

"Viennese noir: streets wet with guilt, oblique camera angles, chases through city sewers, a smiling villain whose selling of black-market diluted penicillin killed people. The finest, grimmest, gaudiest collaboration of novelist-screenwriter Graham Greene and director Carol Reed (The Fallen Idol, Our Man in Havana) also marked a collision of many cultural forces. To Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), the British officer who oversees this section of postwar Vienna, the American writer Holly Martins "
