There's still debate about who directed The Thing From Another World, Christian Nyby (listed as the director) or Howard Hawks (listed as producer). I like to think that Nyby directed it, but he took his marching orders from the Shadow King (Hawks). As many have said and I'm repeating, Hawks' fingerprints (boy's club, overlapping dialogue, etc...) were all over the film. Regardless of who directed ... read more

Wonderfully kitsch piece of Cold War paranoia in which a team of American scientists dig up an alien being from the North Pole only to be terrorised by it once it defrosts. Famously the inspiration for John Carpenter’s The Thing, there is little to compare between the two aside from the concept and setting.

In this film the alien is rather interestingly revealed to be plant-based,... read more

Films that absolutely needed that remake. (10 movies items)

"The original, while great, was not able to live up to the story from which it was derived. the 1982 sequel "The Thing" made up for its shortcomings and then some."

My movie year 2016 (666 movies items)

"28.11. (PC/Yle Areena) Tarkkailkaa taivaita.

Moviewatcher122's 2016 Horrorfest (24 movies items)

"October 1 "So few people can boast that they've lost a flying saucer and a man from Mars -all in the same day! Wonder what they'd have done to Columbus if he'd discovered America, and then mislaid it." Since I've never started off the month with a classic horror film, I decided to kick off this horrorfest with the original Thing. I really liked the whole atmosphere and setting this movie had and the characters are well-developed and there's a lot of interesting dialogue going around here. It"

Movies the giraffe watched in 2016: May (30 movies items)

"First viewing - May 8th I picked this one up on the cheap recently, and have been curious about it ever since the first time I watched Carpenter's The Thing. And while this one doesn't hold a candle to Carpenter's version, for its time it's a really damn good movie. I appreciated the playful banter throughout, dug the characters, and found it thoughtful entertainment. It didn't quite cross my personal line of greatness, but I'm glad it's part of my collection so I can watch it again."
