Horror classic

Does this film really need a review? I mean, it's The Shining! Everyone has seen it, right? And if you haven't whats wrong, why aren't you running to the video store to buy it? It's certainly Stephen King's best adaptation, but I think it is not because of King himself (who hated this version, and was determined to re-make a more true-to-book version several years after this one). The real ... read more

Kubrick at his finest, Nicholson at his finest. What else could anyone want? This version of Stephen King's book has almost nothing to do with it. And that's one of the best things about the film.

In 1997 King did a remake with many more elements of the book, and the film is a sleeper. I had to watch it like four different times to get through it.

Anyway, I'm not here... read more

The shining é ... read more

"21/5/17 Having the opportunity to see this on the big screen is like watching it for the first time. Stanley Kurbrick's now legendary horror is still as tense and as gripping, yet seen in a cinema, we get to see just how good Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall are and that music gets under your skin. One of the finest examples of how to make a truly terrifying horror film."

1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (1980's) (153 movies items)

" Notes: Well, pretty much like anything else coming from this director, it is basically another huge classic but, to be honest, it doesn't really belong to my favorites. But even so, it is seriously entertaining, I think it is probably the most accessible movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and, once again, the directing was just amazing. On top of that, Jack Nicholson gave one of his best performances and the whole thing was indeed just spellbinding to watch. And, yet, somehow, it was still miss"

Bml93's Film Experiences for 2017: First Half (70 movies items)

" Today's audiences are likely to find The Shining to be not particularly scary, and possibly even bored by it. Nevertheless, The Shining stands solid as a true horror film that scares more on a psychological level than with cheap effects. Watching jack Nicholson's descent into madness is truly terrifying, and this film is bound to leave you scarred with at least one of its many iconic scenes."

Greatest Horror Movies (18 movies items)

"Stanley Kubrick's (2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut) masterpiece of horror and paranoia accounts a family quietly going insane together. While the original author Stephen King would shun it, it's very close to a perfect film."

500 Essential Cult Movies (502 movies items)

" As with most of Kubrick's films, time has been kind, and The Shining is now considered one of the scariest and most artistically satisfying psychological horror films ever made, particularly in the post-seventies era. Production was not without its problems. But none of this shows in the finished product, which is self-assured with a masterful build-up of tension and plenty of now-iconic imagery. As a result, The Shining has been influential in not just horror but also general pop-culture for "
