Wendy e Jon Savage, irmãos intelectuais fracassados. Ela tenta em vão levar adiante as peças que escreve, enquanto que ele é um PhD que não consegue terminar seu livro sobre Bertold Brecht. Ambos evitam encarar que, acima de tudo, são fracassados também na vida afetiva. O que dinamiza a relação desses irmãos distantes é o aparente motor da trama: o pai idoso que precisa de um lar e cuidados. Enquanto buscam um asilo decente para o velhinho, vão aos poucos conhecendo-se mais e tentando bravamente perdoar a ausência do pai em sua vida. Savages delves into areas complex and understandable - two self-absorbed siblings who must become the parent to their father who was barely a parent to them. The two siblings, played by Linney and Hoffman, are entirely likeable, but flawed all the same. Linney plays an aspiring playwright who is struggling to form a relationship and instead is involved with an older, married man. Hoffman plays a professor with a degree in Philosophy who is in a relationship with a foreign woman who must soon go back to her own country. The two pair beautifully together and give the movie its heartfelt comedy. Linney's character is nervous and spastic, whereas Hoffman is more reserved yet equally troubled. I'm experiencing similar events to the Linney and Hoffman's characters within my own family, so this film really hit home. The Savages subtle brand of humour and thoughtfulness make for a deeply funny, superbly acted film. I haven't seen Tamara Jenkins directorial debut 'Slums of Beverly Hills' but if it's half this good I won't leave it long.
