"Can we take a direct flight back to reality, or do we have to change planes in Denver?'"
After Christmas with the Kranks, Surviving Christmas, Fred Claus, Four Christmases and similar interminable dreck, a lot of people groan at the very notion of a family Christmas film as if they're on their way to a root canal. Not to mention, Christmas movies with Tim Allen are typically a spec... read more
This is the movie that started it all, the movie that launched Tim Allen's holiday leap to the top of the box office. Not that this is a good thing, unless of course you fall under the age of 10. But in the spirit of the holiday season, I might have enjoyed this film more if I didn't have to suffer through it on the Disney channel and there torturous commercials. Nevertheless, this movie may rest ... read more

Divorcee Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) is disgusted to learn that his ex (Wendy Crewson) and her husband (Judge Reynolds) have tried - and failed - to break it easy to their 6-year-old son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) that Santa isn't real. On Christmas Eve, Scott reads The Night Before Christmas...then receives an unexpected visitor on his roof. When he's startled by Scott's calling out and falls, the Santa impersonator disappears, leaving only an 8-reindeer sleigh and a suit with instructions to put it on if he's involved in an accident. Scott does, and is transported around the town dropping gifts through chimneys until he's taken to the North Pole and informed by a group who claim they're elves that he is now Santa. Charlie is proud of his dad's new job, though Scott's convinced it's a dream. Until his hair turns white, his beard refuses to stay shaved, he gains weight inexplicably, even for his sudden love of junk food...Now he's accepted it, there's just one problem: how to keep it secret from his disbelieving family?... Tim Allen, "The Santa Clause." While this movie was responsible for the irritating tendency of people to misspell "Santa Claus" with an "e" on the end, Tim Allen's character's journey after inadvertently inheriting the responsibilities of Santa Claus is anything but irritating. He grows to be genuinely kind, selfless, and good, and is genuinely admirable by picture's end, quite the achievement for a Tim Allen performance."

What a surprisingly good movie. It was heart-warming and Tim Allen was actually funny. Much better than the sequels. (I've seen the second one years ago and have no plans to revisit that movie.)"

After Christmas with the Kranks, Surviving Christmas, Fred Claus, Four Christmases and similar interminable dreck, a lot of people groan at the very notion of a family Christmas film as if they're on their way to a root canal. Not to mention, Christmas movies with Tim Allen are typically a special kind of awful.
