A godsend for action fans

"Pulling a trigger is like ordering takeout."

Directed by the Welsh-born Gareth Evans, The Raid is an elegantly simple, pared-down, back-to-basics action movie. And it's awesome. A vicious showcase of shootouts and severe bodily trauma from Indonesia, The Raid is a pure adrenaline rush destined to become a manly action classic with its insane battles and jaw-dropping moments of viol... read more

The Raid: Redemption, the newest film from writer/director Gareth Evans, isn’t so much an action movie as it is an action experience. Featuring some of the best fight scenes ever put to film, nearly every minute is a pulse pounding, hair raising, piece of awesome.

Set in the slums of Jakarta, Indonesia, the story begins as an elite 20-man SWAT team orchestrates a raid on a 30 floor... read more

Now, you might be wondering "TCJ, why a 7 out of 10? The action scenes are worth a 10 out of 10!!!" But Let's make one thing perfectly clear: I don't put style over substance when it comes to a review. But you know what? I don't hate this movie.

"22.02.2015 Fantastic martial arts movie with intense, brutal and technically perfect fights. Especially the final fight is amazing. The story is weak but that's not a problem, as the focus is on the fights. My rating: 8,0"

I'm Sorry, Roger Ebert, But You're Wrong (12 movies items)

"Ebert's Consensus: 1 star out of 4 Another attack of moral conscience for Ebert, who says the movie is pure wall-to-wall violence. While he says he doesn't have a problem with violence in a well-made movie, apparently The Raid doesn't cut the mustard in this respect. Sorry, You're Wrong Funny how Ebert appreciates generic pap like the PG-13 Total Recall remake, or the universally loathed Clash of the Titans reboot, then goes on to trash one of the best pure action movies in years. He's just not"

" A new benchmark in modern martial arts action movies, The Raid is pure awesome from start to finish. It does get a bit tiring towards the end with so much ass-kicking going on, but for the most part it's a superb ride, and its R rating coupled with phenomenal action scenes ensures it's a must-see for guys who respect cinematic mandom."

An average movie

“Right from the moment this movie was released, it became a massive cult classic and it was directly hailed as the best action movie from at least the last 10 years. Something similar happened a while back with ‘Ong-back’ , a movie I really enjoyed, so I became really eager to check this flick. On the other hand, Roger Ebert was really dismissive with his review so I was then a little bit skeptical but I still wanted to see if it was any good. The first nice surprise was that it didn’t start with an endless and boring introduction and, within the first 10 minutes, the mayhem started and never really stopped but that was, in fact, its downfall. Even though all the action scenes were perfectly shot and choreographed, there was no room to invest yourself in the (pedestrian) plot and the” read more

A 7 out of 10 would indicate that I had fun with it. I love the action. The problem is that it is mostly a style-over-substance case. Granted, it had a decent enough plot: Kick a crime lord out of the apartment complex he is in control of. At first you might think that this is a ripoff of Dredd, but this film was originally released 2011 in Indonesia. Dredd was wide-released the following year.

Character development, while somewhat present, gets a bit dull at times. I kind of wanted the development to be a little bit mo” read more

"Hands down this is the best action that I have seen since Jet Li in Hero. No matter what you may read about The Raid: Redemption, words cannot express how a much it raises the bar for action films. A must see for action junkies! The only complaint that I have about this film doesn't even refer to this film. I just squirm when I picture the inevitable American remake. Probably casting will put Vin Diesel, Matt Damon, etc. Now, I am not saying all American "interpretations" are horrid, just that s"

"Holy... shit. Seeing the 'The Raid' theatrically remains one of the coolest cinematic experiences from this year. I love kung-fu films are its so rare for them to get big screen releases in the states and I'm so glad Sony Pictures Classics grabs the rights to this after TIFF. There isn't a better action film I could recommend right now. It's relentless, fast paced, produces a fighting style we've never really seen in a film and show cases a great new talent in the genre with director Garth Evan"

The movie has received a lot of hype and attention since hitting film festivals in 2011, and it's easy to see why - it's one of the most insane and inventive action flicks in years, with its straightforward storyline providing an effective excuse for an ultraviolent joyride the likes of which we rarely see.

I Recommend...(The Short List) (80 movies items)

" Action/Martial Arts Indonesian. The most brutal action movie I've ever seen. The violence is non-stop almost to the point where it becomes fatiguing by the end. It starts with gunfights, moves on to melee and finishes with some extremely impressive martial arts. Possibly the greatest action movie I've seen. A SWAT team go into a seedy tenement to arrest a crime lord. Things go poorly."

"Badd-ass that's all there is to it. This movie had so much action. A "Block" or apartment building is ran by drug lord bad guys. And a SWAT team goes in there to beat up with Kung-Fu, buckets of bullets, some awesome knife work and an exploding refrigerator. I must say the two on one fight scene with "Madog" was one of the best fight scenes I've seen in awhile. "
