Silence is great

Silence is great once again to me, as this is my 2nd viewing of a silent film. My first was City Lights which was awesome, this just as great. We all know the famous image of the Phantom, and how it would give kids nightmares. The phantom brought life to this film, and when we see that moment of shock, when he takes off the mask, we are all in "ahh" of what we see.

It has a tremendous amount of things in common with Dracula, it’s a canonized lion of a film despite not being much good and interminably boring, yet it’s blessed with a central performance that is probably the entire reason that the film continues to endure. I suppose the most accurate way to describe to would be: classic-by-default.

Since it is such a classic, I thought it was finally to time to check it out. Honestly, I had a rather hard time to make up my mind about this flick. First of all, is it really a horror feature? Sometimes, I thought it was actually pretty funny above all because of the mannered acting of those silent movies. At the Opera of Paris, a mysterious phantom threatens a famous lyric singer, Carlotta and thus forces her to give up her role (Marguerite in Faust) for unknown Christine Daae. Christine meets this phantom (a masked man) in the catacombs, where he lives. What's his goal? What's his secret?

A classic

“Since it is such a classic, I thought it was finally to time to check it out. Honestly, I had a rather hard time to make up my mind about this flick. First of all, is it really a horror feature? Sometimes, I thought it was actually pretty funny above all because of the mannered acting of those silent movies. I mean, with a Charles Chaplin movie, it works like a charm but with a horror flick like this one, it makes you chuckle quite often. Also, even though at first I was quite happy with the awesome classic music, it was actually rather distracting because, since it wasn’t especially composed for this movie, it often didn’t fit at all the action. Still, the production value was quite impressive, especially for a movie almost reaching 90 years old, and there was definitely something dar” read more

Interesting Early Horror

“The second of many film adaptations of Gaston Leroux's novel (the first being a 'lost' and mostly forgotten film, "The Phantom of the Opera" is mostly famous for Lon Chaney's very physical performance as the titular phantom, a hideously deformed man who lurks the halls of the Paris Opera House, circa 19th Century.

The Phantom (or Erik, as he'd rather be called, though no one ever does) is obsessed with one singular goal, winning the love of the beautiful Christine Daae (Mary Philbin), an opera singer who he idolizes. Willing to do anything to make her a star and earn her affections, Erik pulls strings to make her a leading lady, but his obsession comes with deadly consequences.

I'll be perfectly honest- although from my love of fictional loners, losers, and lunatics th” read more

Gaston Leroux’s source material, on the surface level, should lend itself incredibly well to stage and screen, but there has yet to be a totally satisfying adaptation. Some lean too strongly in favor of musical numbers and lavish sets and costumes (the 1943 version and the thundering, inexplicably popular Andrew Lloyd Weber stage show) or too far into Gothic horrors and grotesque makeups (the 1989 version springs to mind). None of them have be” read more

Rediscovering Horror: a new project (26 movies items)

"Viewed: November 2 2012 I thought I was going to get "White Zombie" in the mail, but instead I got The Phantom of the Opera. So I watched it. This movie is beautiful. The sets are massive. There must have been at least 100 extras. There are costumes, musicians, dancers. This movie felt incredibly complete. I had gotten used to watching horror movies with a shoestring budget that last only 70 minutes. Mary Philbin is gorgeous in her role as Christine Daae. Her eyes grews like saucers every tim"

10 From 20: My Favorite Films From The Silent Era (10 movies items)

" Later on as a kid, since I lived in the Chicagoland area, that meant that an important part of my young viewing habits was the midwestern version of a localized TV horror show called Creature Features. One of the things I remember most about this program was how the beginning credits ran with a montage of scenes of some of the most famous black & white horror flicks, including the most famous scene of this one. And for me, out of the bunch, the scariest was the image of the Phantom revealing h"
