The Lost Weekend

Billy Wilder was never afraid to bounce back and forth between making you laugh and making you cry. People tend to think of him as the jovial jokester behind Some Like It Hot, The Fortune Cookie and The Apartment. Fine movies all, but he also did black-as-midnight comedies (Sunset Boulevard) and tremendously powerful dramas like The Lost Weekend. Billy Wilder was a genius, and this was only his fo... read more

Don Birnam, long-time alcoholic, has been "on the wagon" for ten days and seems to be over the worst; but his craving has just become more insidious. Evading a country weekend planned by his brother Wick and girlfriend Helen, he begins a four-day bender. In flashbacks we see past events, all gone wrong because of the bottle. But this bout looks like being his last...one way or the other.

My movie year 2017 (590 movies items)

500 Essential Cult Movies (502 movies items)

" The Lost Weekend won four Oscars, all well deserved; this film is not an easy film to watch, probably because of its gritty, relentlessly truthful portrayal of alcoholism. This is harrowing and surprisingly modern filmmaking: brave, honest, and ugly. "
