I decided today to get into Robert Altman after realising I’d only seen McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Popeye by him. So I looked to see which films I had access to and this was the oldest film I could find by him.

Probably a bad start as I absolutely adored this movie, like loved it beyond all reasonable measure. I’m familiar with Marlowe as a character but only as played by Bogart ... read more

Leave it to Robert Altman to take his sarcasm to film noir and emerge with a brilliant take that marries a 40s hardboiled detective to the paranoia and malaise of the 70s. Part of the reason that the film works so well is that it doesn’t treat the source material as a hallowed text, instead chopping and skewering it, rearranging and reassigning various plot strands, emerging with something that ... read more

BradWesley123's Movie Journal- March 2015 (27 movies items)

" DVD- 1hr. 52min. First Viewing If you enjoy Inherent Vice, you'll likely be as pleased with The Long Goodbye. They both have the same indifference to their own mystery, though I'd argue that Goodbye has more narrative cohesion (just barely). On it's own the movie is a satisfying quasi-noir/comedic mystery that benefits from strong direction and a towering performance by Elliott Gould."

50 Great Movies That Were Not Nominated For Any Os (50 movies items)

"Let’s play a little game called “What’s Crazier?” Is it: Legendary Robert Altman was 0 for 5 in directing nominations? Or, Robert Altman wasn’t even nominated for “The Long Goodbye?” It’s a tricky one, because either way, shit’s crazy. The screen incarnation of gumshoe Philip Marlowe, as portrayed by Elliott Gould and guided by Altman’s energetic and organic camera, is easily one of the director’s best efforts, and Academy members completely ignored it. Madness."
