Academy Award-winning Tom Hanks turns in a hilariously original performance in The Ladykillers, the laugh-out-loud comedy that explodes with outrageous wit and slapstick humor from the Coen Brothers (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo). Underneath Professor G.H. Dorr's (Hanks) silver-tongued southern gentleman persona is a devious criminal who's assembled a motley gang of thieves to commit the heist of the century by funneling through his churchgoing landlady's root cellar to a casino's vault of riches. But these cons are far from pros. As their scheme begins blowing up in their faces, their landlady smells a rat. And when she threatens to call the police, they figure they'll just bump her off. After all, how hard can that be? Wickedly funny from start to finish, it would be a crime to miss The Ladykillers.... (more)(less)

TV / REWATCH
Date watched: 9th/10th April, 2013 (late night)
Project: None
Why?: I re-watched the original recently, thought I'd re-watch this one too seeing as it is on. I don't remember too much from this.
Director: Coen Brothers
Thoughts: Well, no. I didn't really take to this version. I just thought it lacked the subtleties that the other one had. Maybe it is a cultural thing, I don't know. I thought Tom Hanks put in a good performance though.
Watch again?: Not especially."

"My least favorite Coen film that I own. But least favorite Coen Brothers film, is still better than most others. Tom Hanks' performance alone is worth the price."

"It's stupid as hell, yes, and you would generally expect something better from them, but it actually does have some real laughs here and there which make it at least entertaining. Although, I haven't seen the original, so that's probably why I'm so much more forgiving of it

Cast : Tom Hanks, Marlon Wayans, J.K. Simmons
What was it about?
An eccentric, if not charming Southern professor and his crew pose as a band in order to rob a casino, all under the nose of his unsuspecting landlord: a sharp old woman.
My two cents:
It is arguably the only failure in their otherwise prestigious career. Indeed, it is a rather lazy and unnecessary remake. Should we blame Tom Hanks or Damon Wayans? Still, it is not that bad and actually worth a look but don't expec"
