The Lady Vanishes

In Hitchcock’s second-to-last British production, the master of suspense utilizes the stiff-upper-lippedness that makes the English culture so well-known. Each character is impossibly polite, remarkably charming and highly intelligent. Witty lines are tossed off with relish, but it soon begins to sink in: we are trapped on a train for roughly the next hour, and something bad is about to happen. ... read more

One of my favorites! Great story line, and characters as well. I can watch this movie over and over and not get tiered of it. :)

I'd call The Lady Vanishes lesser Hitchcock but it does hit on some of his more common tropes. We've a train, a Macgufffin and a case of mistaken (or missing) identity wrapped up in this story of Margaret Lockwood's character searching for a vanished without a trace woman on a train. The search itself is rather compelling as is the interplay between Lockwood and Michael Redgrave (who joins in th... read more

Movies the giraffe watched in 2015: February (26 movies items)

"First viewing - Feb. 17th I wasn't sure what I wanted to watch, so I went for something older to continue my efforts to make up for all the newer movies I watched last month (and this one too). The Lady Vanishes starts off a little slow, but eventually picked up steam & got better as it went. My only complaint was that I knew exactly where it was going, and was therefore ahead of the characters in knowing what was going on. Still, it was amusing seeing them piece it all together & all other asp"

"19.01.2015 Nyt tuli vastaan seinä, en jaksa enää näitä. Kaiketi tämä on arvostettu elokuva, mutta tässä oli vähemmän hyvää kuin aiemmissa keskinkertaisissa Hitcheissä. Junassa sattui ja tapahtui, ja loppu oli kyllä täysin perseestä, jos minulta kysytään."

A classic

“Since I'm a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock, of course, I was really eager to check this out. At first, I was wondering where the whole thing was getting to (I never read beforehand what a movie is about) and, during the first scenes, I thought it would be some kind of farce. Eventually, I understood that the hotel sequence was actually there only to establish all those peculiar characters. Indeed, the real action was to take place later on, on the train. There, it became one of those spellbinding thrillers that only Hitchcock could make back then more than 70 years ago. It was just fascinating to see this woman getting back to her seat and asking where was this old lady who simply vanished. I mean, this has been copied so many times through the years, it was just pretty neat to see Hitchcock” read more

The search itself is rather compelling as is the interplay between Lockwood and Michael Redgrave (who joins in the search) but the movie quickly devolves into an extended allegory about England's hesitancy to fight Germany in World War II.

This is essentially the movie's downfall. The character's attitudes towards war are one note and exaggerated and those final scenes feel more like an infomercial than a satisfying ending to the story. Unlike something like The Great Dictator It doesn't really ” read more

"I hate to admit that I tend to enjoy Hitchcock's later films then his older movies. I think The Lady Vanishes was pretty good, but I didn't like it as much as most people did. I found it pretty boring and the lead characters were not interesting. Not his worst film, but I don't think I will watch it again anytime soon. "
