Everyone knows the story of boy meets girl, boy loses girl. However, there is more to this story here. Set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, Norton is Herr Eisenheim, famous magician (rather, illusionist), whose stage performance has captivated the attention of the Crown Prince, who is to wed Duchess von Deschem (J. Biel), childhood friend of Eisenheim. A crime takes place, but who has done it? Chief... read more

I agree with the other review on here, this is easily one of the most beautiful and best written film this decade. The story is mesmerizing, it really draws you in, and the twist at the end, wow. I mean, wow. Even Sixth Sense's ending wasn't as shocking as this one. Eisenheim had me believing in ghosts and magic by the end.

I haven't seen 'The Departed' yet, the number one conten... read more

Just finished watching it, loved it.

This movie is simply amazing. It goes right in hand with "The Prestige" (though I do like the Prestige more) with it's sudden plot twists and "wha?" moments. The beginning is a little hard to understand, until you begin to see what happens.

The whole fact that magic actually exists kinda makes me go "meh" to this movie, but otherwi... read more

Movie Reviews (901 - 950) (50 movies items)

" The Ups: Combine fantasy, magic, romance and a crime mystery and one get this satisfying story that actually manage to make sense of it's complex ideas. Great acting and production values too. The Downs: It's timing. Had it arrived just a year before it wouldn't have needed to be compared and fight against the more famous "The Prestige". The sequence where one explain away everything by using flashbacks wasn't really needed. "

A good movie

“I remember exactly when I watched this flick. I was on holiday in Paris at my sister’s and when we went to rent a movie. I saw this one and I told her we definitely should watch it. Back then, I was a huge fan of Edward Norton who was the best actor of his generation and I only heard very good things about the movie. Eventually, I think nobody really enjoyed it except myself… Personally, I thought it was pretty good but still, I can’t say it was really mind-blowing though. The point is that it was absolutely a very well made movie, the directing was solid, the costumes and sets looked really good and the cast did a very good job as well (Edward Norton ... Eisenheim, Paul Giamatti, Jessica Biel, Rufus Sewell). So, what was wrong with this movie then? In my opinion, I thought that t” read more

Random Thoughts on Random Films - by Xanadon't (15 movies items)

"I don't like Edward Norton half as much as I used to. Will that change? Or does he just suck now. While I'm thinking about it I should probably rewatch Moonrise Kingdom sometime soon and see if I can't warm up to both Norton and that film a little more."

Unfortunately-Timed Movies (17 movies items)

" The Illusionist/The Prestige - These two films, both about turn-of-the-century magicians, were released within a month of one another. Unfortunately for The Illusionist, The Prestige started with a wide release in October on the back of Christopher Nolan's growing popularity as a director."

"19.8.2012, TV (rewatch - ei muutoksia) Norton käyttää mustaa magiaa ja ihmiset kiinnostuvat ja Paul Giamatti tutkii mitä vittua tapahtuu. Edelleen jees leffa, ei mulla nyt muuta."
