The best monster movie ever? I seriously doubt that making such a claim would be false. Why? I plan to tell you. First of all, Gwoemul propably had the best plot I have ever seen in a movie of this genre. It all starts off seeming like some cliched Godzilla-copy, but the moment we meet our so-called main character, Kan-Du, his occasional dialogue and overall attitude prepare us for something diffe... read more

The movie started off really good, with the first 1/3 or so being some of the best monster action I've seen. The effects are great through out the entire movie (fire is hard to do so I won't count the ending). My only big issue with this movie is how it gets really hard to tell how much time has passed. A lot of things point towards the movie being set during a couple of weeks (the military respon... read more

Koreans are often renowned for their motion pictures, as Korean filmmakers produce horror films and action-thrillers with more verve and creativity than Hollywood. The Host is Korea's attempt at a monster movie in the vein of something like Godzilla. Suffice it to say, the resultant film does not disappoint, and the Koreans have nailed yet another genre. Despite being produced for a paltry sum, The Host is a superlative effort, and its production values are only a few notches below its Hollywood counterparts. This is a consistently thrilling pic, imbu” read more

"Chemicals get dumped into the Han River, and several years later, the result of man's disregard for the aquatic ecological balance surfaces in the form of a....a... well, in this film they call it a host. I say, it's more of a giant walking catfish with Olympic level gymnastic skills. Whatever you wanna call it, it's payback time for all the centuries that humans have been hoisting waterbreathing critters outta the water since back when we first learned how to bait a hook. "One of the best monster movies in this current generation. I think a lot of the drama in this movie was pretty powerful and was very well written. I haven't seen a monster movie like this since the original Godzilla film. "

“Monster/Sci-fi movies aren't really my thing but this hits me right in the sweet spot. First you have possibly my favourite actor of the decade Song Kang-Ho, you have the thrills of a giant tadpole on legs movie mixed in with a dysfunctional family drama, add in government conspiracy and you have another film that shouldn't work but Bong Joon-ho pulls it off with bells on. At times uplifting, at times tragic and comical. It's that perfect mix of light and dark that South Korea gets so well. PLUS it makes Cloverfield look like amateur hour in comparison” read more

20 Movies to Approach New (South) Korean Cinema (20 movies items)

"director: Joon-ho Bong One of my favorite movies ever. This is one of the finest examples of new south korean cinema, and the highest grossing movie ever in the history of south korean cinema. Also, I think Joon-ho Bong is one of the best directors around nowadays, and I'm not talking just about Korea, I'm talking worldwide. Unfortunately, this movie is very underappreciated, especially by western audience; it's actually not only entertaining, but also very deep and subtle. The best recent exa"
