I literally had only one bit of knowledge when I was about to watch it and it is bloody obvious: that it features a hole so I didn't really know what to expect. This surprisingly shook me when I watched it as it did a lot of critics. This just shows what thrillers are all about and how a film can truly succeed without that much violence. This film is very scary but because there was lots of suspen... read more
could have been better kind of got the impression that it was aimed at the younger viewer as it goes a bit fantasy towards the end. Not quite what I expected. 5/10
The Hole is a “film” about a fatherless family facing their worst fears which come to them via a hole in their basement. A distant, over-worked mother wants nothing more than for her two sons, one a hormone raged teenager and the other a damaged adolescent, to get along and spend more time together. The teenager’s angst leads him to the company of a female companion, and together they fuck a... read more

Life couldnt possibly get worse, or so thought 17 year old Dane and his 10 year old brother Lucas, when their single mother Susan uproots them from New York City to the sleepy little town of Bensonville. For Dane the only exciting thing about their new town is the beautiful girl next door, Julie. With Susan spending more and more time at work, Dane and Lucas are left unattended to explore the depths of their eerie new residence. With Dane paying more attention to Julie, he has far less time and patience for his little brother. But then everything changes when they find a sinister bottomless hole under a locked trap door in the basement. As the brothers experiment with the hole they realize that the cold pit goes on forever. They drop a nail and never hear it hit bottom. They lower a flashlight and a video camera and they get consumed by the darkness. Hoping for some answers about the houses past, Dane and Lucas bring Julie in on their new discovery. When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and past nightmares coming to life, the trio will have to come face to face their darkest fears to put an end to THE HOLE.... (more)(less)

This film were overall actually quite good. It was particularly great up until it started to solve the mysteries it had created. It ended in a disappointing, predictable CGI fest that probably only were there to provide some imagery for the 3D. Not that I saw it in 3D, though. But until that, it was really great.
Working as a throwback to teen thrillers from the 80's The Hole is at times genuinely creepy, but it's mostly just a really enjoyable film to watch. It got good, likeable ch"
"I'm probably in the minority that actually found Joe Dante's The Hole genuinely fun. The atonality of suburbia is given a turn of head as the blatant mystery of its simple premise warps the lives of all involved. The acting isn't particularly great, and its concepts and gimmicks are definitely overused - but it works. The horror/fantasy elements are perfectly balanced, the jump scares aren't overdone, and the narrative progresses very well, leading up to a rather strong ending. All in all, the f"

January 2nd: Instant watch, TV screen
Overall opinion: Meh
The Hole wasn't brilliant but if you're thinking of watching it just know: it could be a looooot worse. In comparison to lotsa those awful teen slasher flicks this one's okay, it's got a plot sorta and it really does try. Neat idea, the characters are not complete buffoons nor big stereotypes- nothing special but still. I guess if you're a horror buff it's worth a look, it did have some cool moments. It wasn't very scary however. I'm a"

What an utterly unremarkable way to kick off the new year. The story is about a family moving into a house and the kids find a mysterious hole in the basement that can manifest it's victim's greatest fears into reality to dispose of them. This results in really, really tame stuff, such as abusive dads, a single ghost girl and a ghost cop with an exposed brain ("Gnarly!" I can hear the 10-year olds state). Joe Dante's name is on this movie alright, but watching it made me feel that maybe t"

“The Hole 3D" is the criminal trial that Joe Dante is a fossil of the eighties. The story chronicles the adventures of three kids who are in the basement of his house a hole that will "all their fears." A script that gets pampered and grateful awe with ways but always with sincerity of a veteran. Joe Dante is with the use of "muppets" old-fashioned, the trauma of the dysfunctional families Spielberg, less bellows in his trademark humor black, but above all, it is entertaining.” read more

"Genuinely quite terrifying. It helps that Chris Massoglia is beautiful though... Haley Bennett is good, convincing when it comes to the horror bits, I also love her in Music & Lyrics. And Teri Polo was good too.
