The Heiress

Olivia de Havilland is always at her greatest when her blushing complexion, innocent eyes and sweetness can be used to create tension with the characters that she portrays. When she can use our inherent bias towards idealizing her to portray insanity (The Snake Pit), bitter strength and intelligence (Gone With the Wind), or, even, cold-blooded murderess (Hush, Hush Sweet Charolette) she creates a ... read more

It seemed unfair that the richly beautiful Olivia De Havilland played someone she was entirely not: that of an unattractive, old-maid-bound heiress. There wasn't even anyone to compare her to in the movie. No Elizabeth Taylor or Hedy Lamarr to challange the affection of dashing Montgomery Clift.

Of course, this is an acting movie. One that garnered her an acting award. And that final ... read more

Misery Fest: Movies that leave you depressed (25 movies items)

"There is a kind of wound to the soul that only love can make. This movie illustrated that point exceedingly well. This is one of those movies that leave you feeling despondent for days. Sure, you go through the motions of everyday tasks... but really you're thinking about these characters, and their story. Olivia de Havilland plays heiress to her father's fortune, and Montgomery Clift plays a charming suitor. Innocuous enough, but watch the movie, and you'll understand there's much more to it. "

Of course, this is an acting movie. One that garnered her an acting award. And that final scene that showed her climbing the steps stone-faced, stone-hearted as the moment of moments for her character, became her tribute clip.

"The Heiress" is an excellent period drama. Period. What makes it a bit interesting is the setting that oddly feels like a crime scene. Catherine Sloper (De Havilland), the willing victim; Dr. Austin Sloper (Ralph Richardson), investigator and also judge; ” read more

The Heiress

“Olivia de Havilland is always at her greatest when her blushing complexion, innocent eyes and sweetness can be used to create tension with the characters that she portrays. When she can use our inherent bias towards idealizing her to portray insanity (The Snake Pit), bitter strength and intelligence (Gone With the Wind), or, even, cold-blooded murderess (Hush, Hush Sweet Charolette) she creates a great tension within her characters. A sense that bubbling beneath their wholesome and still surfaces are murky and dark depths. In this, her greatest performance, she uses all of those good-girl assets to subvert us once more. This time, she wants to show us a deep-rooted bitterness, a craving for revenge and cry to be loved – all at the same time.
