Brilliant Chaplin stuff!

"We've just discovered the most wonderful, the most marvelous poisinous gas. It will kill everybody."

Charlie Chaplin quickly became one of the greatest film comedians in cinema history. His films are constantly full of such witty satire, quirky characters and a mixed bag of hilarious gags.

With The Great Dictator I feel that Chaplin has really excelled himself. Alth... read more

To be honest, even though I enjoyed Chaplin’s later work like ‘Monsieur Verdoux’ and ‘Limelight’, I wasn’t exactly blown away by these movies (I should re-watch them again though). On the other hand, you won't hear me complaining about this amazing and timeless masterpiece. Where should I start? Even though it was released 13 years after the end of the silent era, this was Charles Chap... read more

This is definately the most serious film from Charles Chaplin of the ones that I have seen so far from him. This film is very serious obviously because it is a war film. It was a rather serious film too because of how the story was written especially when it was made. It was funny that Chaplin was ripping off Adolf Hitler with all the speeches, walks, impressions etc. It was probably scary aswell ... read more

In Chaplin's satire on Nazi Germany, dictator Adenoid Hynkel has a double... a poor Jewish barber... who one day is mistaken for Hynkel.

" Vista: 04/06/2017. Vista por primera vez. Opinión: Bastante buena en general, el factor principal por el que el filme logra funcionar de una buena manera es por la interpretación de Chaplin, el tipo tiene un innegable carisma y poder en pantalla, tiene expresiones y un estilo de actuar que le es muy distinguible de otros actores cómicos, y a la hora de interpretar dos personajes distintos logra darle a cada uno rasgos diferenciables y bufonadas que los hacen destacar, y particularmente en lo"

"30.12. Blu-ray, 2nd viewing DIRECTED BY Charles Chaplin Disappointing. I considered this a masterpiece when I was in high school but now it feels like a pretty mediocre film built around a legendary ending. Chaplin is one of my heroes but I guess silent films were his actual forte. I need to re-watch Limelight soon, maybe that one is a bit more mature sound film. "

PopMatter's Essential Film Performances - 2013 (50 movies items)

"Jack Oakie The title of The Great Dictator is a wonderful (and obvious) work of irony. There is nothing great about Adenoid Hynkel, Charlie Chalpin’s ineffectually megalomaniacal Hitler stand-in. It is instead Jack Oakie’s Benzino Napaloni—Hynkel’s dictatorial rival—who is great. This is great as in “grand”, “dramatic” and even “inflated,” as Oakie appears to be when he makes his Fascist Face, in an effort to intimidate Hynkel into signing a non-aggression treaty. “OCTOBER 18TH, 2015

In the first time I saw this movie, I thought that I was wrong when I gave 4 stars out of 5 stars, but in this second time, I think I am true!

The Great Dictator is the first sound film of Charlie Chaplin and is also the first Chaplin's boring movie that I've seen. Because the film advanced a stirring, controversial condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, fascism, antisemitism, and the Nazis, so almost people like it? The great song but boring comedy-war story, boring characters, boring ending...

If Chaplin wanted to send any message about war, I think he should remove the story of the Jewish barber in the movie.” read more
