"If you lose this war don't blame me."

The 1920s was the era for old black and white movie comedies. This era was ruled by three factions: Charlie Chaplin, The Marx Brothers and Buster Keaton. The General is a very short (75-minute) but classic silent film from Keaton.

Back in the days when these films were released it was pivotal to include a bunch of fantastically ... read more

Even though I'm a huge fan of Charles Chaplin, having seen all his full length directing efforts and many of his shorts, I must admit I'm pretty illiterate concerning Buster Keaton. As a matter of fact, before watching this flick, I had never seen any of his movies! I know, shame on me... As you can imagine, I had some huge expectations before watching it and I must admit I was actually a little b... read more

"3.11.2013 My first touch to Buster Keaton and only my second non-Japanese silent comedy to the date. The first one was Chaplin's City Lights and I must say, I liked this better. I like how Keaton relies on long and drawn out action sequences (this seemed to consists only of few moments for example, over a plot that doesn't even really matter in any way), like in form of the two train chases in this, instead of on some random gags where people fall into river or fight in funny manner, because th"

“Before I write my review, I want to tell a little anecdote about how I watched this film and crap like that. Well, first of all, I've been watching plenty of Chaplin recently. I've seen more than half of his films by now and they've all been excellent, so recently I've been really into silent comedy, and I've noticed I haven't seen one Buster Keaton film, and I've really been wanting to. I've especially been wanting to watch The General, arguably the greatest silent film of all-time. Meanwhile, recently, in fact just yesterday, I found out about an authentic silent movie theater thirty minutes away from my place. They play films every weekend and they have musical performances and shorts (the one that I saw was called Helpmates with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy) before the film and live or” read more

Filmsite's Greatest Funniest Movie Moments/Scenes (224 movies items)

"The many spectacular train chases, ground-breaking pursuit sequences and acrobatic stuntwork as Southern Confederate locomotive engineer Johnnie Gray (director Buster Keaton) pursues his own hijacked train (The General) and faces innumerable challenges; Johnnie's deadpan, poker-faced expressions and the perfectly timed and staged scene of Johnnie with a stumpy, snub-nosed howitzer cannon and his ride on the cowcatcher of the train as he flips away cross-ties strewn across the tracks; the most ex"
