I’m a huge fan of Marlon Brando. He was one of the best actors that ever lived but, still, after ‘Apocalypse now’, he didn’t do anything really amazing and all his movies were, at best, watchable but pretty often pure garbage, I’m afraid. This movie is supposed to be the exception though. Indeed, many viewers, including Roger Ebert himself, thought it was one fine feature and a great com... read more

"A great actor's self-parody might be fascinating, especially if the actor is Brando. But the performance Brando gives here is anything but a good-natured goof on himself. - Hal Hinson, Washington Post"

"Someone actually convinced Marlon Brando's agent to get him to spoof his own Godfather character....? Actually, now that I think about it, on another Matthew Broderick film, someone actually convinced Godzilla's agent to allow him to spoof....oh wait.... that was CGI effects, wasn't it? Why am I getting this mixed up? It is b'cuz at point of his career, Marlon seemed like he spoofing Godzilla, but without the rubber suit....?"

This movie is supposed to be the exception though. Indeed, many viewers, including Roger Ebert himself, thought it was one fine feature and a great come-back for this thespian. However, I tend to respectfully disagree. I mean, Brando was indeed pretty good but the movie was rather lame if you ask me. Basically, it is one of those typical comedies where Matthew Broderick plays a clueless and spineless guy. It is rather funny that the guy got his breakthrough by portraying the coolest high-school teenager that ever lived (Ferris Bueller) but then ” read more

I regret this film. (34 movies items)

"Marlon Brando, The Freshman Brando despised The Freshman and vowed to retire from acting after finishing it, saying he was sorry to have ended his career with such "a stinker." It went on to be probably the most highly regarded and well-liked movie of his later career. Subsequently changed his mind, saying it would be "reasonable". "
