A classic

6 years, 6 months ago at Aug 23 9:11
I had already seen this one but it was really ages ago so I thought it was time for a re-watch. Eventually, this time again, I wasn't disappointed by the damned thing. Indeed, up to that point, David Cronenberg had been involved with some rather gruesome horror features for a limited audience and it was his second mainstream project, after 'The Dead Zone' which, for some reason, didn't really work... read more

To start off with, The Fly is 4-in-1; Horror, sci-fi, tragic-romance and a film with a message. Let's start with the first shall we?

Horror: To the modern audience he is known for crime-thrillers but to fans he is best known for the 80's body-horrors which had originally propelled him to stardom. The Fly is his best effort to date. Chris Walas's ground-breaking imagining of what would... read more

Description: David Cronenberg's remake of the 1958 classic transcends its genre to become a moving portrait of a man and his lover attempting to come to terms with his physical disintegration. "The Fly" stars Jeff Goldblum as a spaced-out scientist who invents a genetic teleportation machine and accidentally transforms himself into a fly. In the horrifyingly graphic detail that is his trademark, Cronenberg depicts the scientist's painful mutation from human into insect. What gives the film its tragic dimension is the emotional depth of the relationship between the scientist and his journalist girlfriend (Geena Davis) as she witness ... (more)

Movie Reviews (1151-1200) (50 movies items)

" David Cronenberg's updated take on the 1958 cult classic removes what was fun and camp and give an disturbing analysis of what will happen with a body crossed with a fly - degenerated mind and gross scenes of a man losing body parts. Cronenberg's most mainstream movie is a horrific science fiction tale where Jeff Goldblum give one top performances buried in disgusting make-up and gore. Geena Davis give the film it's heart and becomes more than just a love interest and dame in distress as she i"

"17/6/17 David Cronenberg's shocking remake of the 50's classic is more than just a gory horror as we watch mild-mannered scientist Jeff Goldblum turn into a fly after an experiment with a teleporter goes wrong. Part beauty and the beast-esque love story, part journey into madness, this still has the power to shock while at the same time amazed by the superb make-up and effects. Definitely not for the sqeamish."

1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (1980's) (153 movies items)

" Notes: Up to that point, David Cronenberg had been involved with some rather gruesome horror features for a limited audience and it was his first mainstream project, if I recall correctly. The most startling aspect with this movie, in my opinion, is that it seamlessly combines 3 different genres: horror, science-fiction and romance. And it does it surprisingly well. Obviously, it still retained its B vibe that you can find in Cronenberg's previous work which was definitely an asset but it was "
