A very good movie

This is a rather unknown and forgotten feature. Honestly, I don't really remember how or why I ended up much watching this flick. My best guest is that there was a good critic in the TV magazine. Anyway, it was eventually a very nice surprise. I don't know why exactly but I found it rather fascinating. Maybe it has to do with the combination of sweet and sour, it was filled with joy and but it had... read more

Roberto, a shy law student in Rome, meets Bruno, a forty-year-old exuberant, capricious man, who takes him for a drive through the Roman and Tuscany countries in the summer of 1962. They will spend two days together, meet both Roberto's and Bruno's family. The time Roberto spends with Bruno is a hilarious, but sometimes emotionally merciless accelerated maturization process. While Bruno's easy going "l'usage du monde" and societal success attract Roberto's great admiration, he also slowly realizes Bruno's hollowness, superficiality and unhappiness.

CRITERION FILMS (781 movies items)

"The ultimate Italian road comedy, Il sorpasso stars the unlikely pair of Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant as, respectively, a waggish, freewheeling bachelor and the straitlaced law student he takes on a madcap trip from Rome to Tuscany. An unpredictable journey that careers from slapstick to tragedy, this film, directed by Dino Risi, is a wildly entertaining commentary on the pleasures and consequences of the good life. A holy grail of commedia all’italiana, Il sorpasso is so fresh "

"15.03. PC/TV, 1st viewing DIRECTED BY Dino Risi This idea could have been executed so much better if the humour were actually funny or if it were tuned down to a minimum, instead letting the dramatic aspects and character psychology play a larger role. As it is, there is too much unnecessary, unfunny bumbling going on with only hints at any character development. I credit most of my enjoyment of the film to its ace soundtrack, laced with rad Italian 1960s pop songs, its pretty cinematography a"

Anyway, it was eventually a very nice surprise. I don't know why exactly but I found it rather fascinating. Maybe it has to do with the combination of sweet and sour, it was filled with joy and but it had also some huge sad moments. Even though I know both Jean-Louis Trintignat and Vittorio Gassman, I must admit, I'm rather oblovious about their work but they were both really good. I know, the whole thing was eventually not really original but I really loved the execution. The way they played with the stereotypes and the characters was quite spellbinding, at least, that's my opinion. To conclude, ” read more
