Clean movie - watched as a family. Jim Henson did a great job! Probably too scary for young kids. My 9 & 12 loved it. There is almost 1 hour of behind the scenes (in the extras section) which really shows what went into the making of this film. That part was EXTREMELY good. I let my kids see a couple of the characters from the behind the scenes section first, so they would appreciate the movie a l... read more
Since I kept hearing good things about this flick, I got really intrigued and I definitely had to check it out. First of all, on a technical level, it is a really impressive feature. Indeed, the puppets and the sets just looked great. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the creatures, the characters and, basically, the whole fantasy world they managed to create which was just fascinating. On the downsid... read more

Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe.... The Ups: Impressive fantasy without a single human being in it. It just happens to be great creations from Jim Hensons puppet factory. The ending is extremly intense for it's time and target group and let me devastated for years. The atmosphere is out of this world.
The Downs: It is slow-moving and the story could have needed an extra polish. "

"The screenplay by David Odell, based on a story by Mr. Henson, is without any narrative drive whatever. It's without charm as well as interest.

"The little hairy things that crawl across and that the Creatures eat are modified wind-up toy robots that run like crazy on two legs as a round rolling central body that houses the wind up motor. The wind-up key was removable.
Early drafts of the script featured Jen and Kira traveling through the underworld where they encountered a race of underground mining creatures. This concept was later integrated by Jim Henson into Fraggle Rock and served as the partial basis for the story of The Power o"

"To save our world, Gelfling, you must find the shard before the three suns meet - if not, Skesis rule forever."

Keeping with my tradition by closing out the month with another 1982 classic. I don't think I have seen The Dark Crystal since the 80's - it is a Jim Henson created fantasy world where a Gelfling is sent on a quest to find a crystal shard to save his world from the evil Skesis - although created by Henson, this is n"
