Clearly there is much influence from Terry Gilliam in this film; in fact there are particular moments that specifically recall Gilliam’s masterpiece ‘Brazil’. There are also strong elements of Steampunk, coming years before the widespread popularity of the style thus somewhat pioneering its imagery. The film is a visual feast, with a huge amount of imagination and invention gone into the wonderful sets, which at the time boasted one of French films largest budgets in its history. "Best French movie ever! let the argument commence. I'm probably biased on this one, I've been watching this since I was in high school and never get tired of it. Visually still one of the best movies I've ever seen despite the advent and over integration of CGI, all the technology in the world can't make up for good artistic style and design. "

"Ulkonäöltään ja hahmoiltaan helvetin hieno Jean-Pierre Jeunet -tekele. Ainekset olisi ollut hyväänkin leffaan, mutta mitä helvettiä. Ensinnäkin leffasta olisi voinut katsoa ensimmäiset ja viimeiset kymmenen minuuttia, koska niiden välissä ei tapahtunut yhtään mitään. Leffa junnasi armottomasti paikoillaan ja juonessakaan ei kyllä ollut loppupelissä mitään järkeä."
