''It is quite understandable; it's a very natural reaction. But one day - in a week, a month, a year - on that day when, God willing, we all return to our homes again, you're going to feel very proud of what you have achieved here in the face of great adversity. What you have done should be, and I think will be, an example to all our countrymen, soldier and civilian alike. You have survived with h... read more

WW II. British prisoners of war are ordered to build a bridge to accommodate the Burma-Siam railway.

I had never seen this classic in its entirety until recently.
While the story certainly had more impact upon its release, the movie still is worth watching for the actors, the director’s work, the script and the photography.

This is a beautiful classic, which ... read more

"Do not speak to me of rules. This is war! This is not a game of cricket!"

The Bridge on the River Kwai is a film that has been widely acclaimed and immensely praised in the decades following its release. I don't think there is anyone on this planet who isn't familiar with the famous theme tune which is played instrumentally, and whistled by the cast in a few scenes.

The film deals with the situation of British prisoners of war during World War II who are ordered to build a bridge to accommodate the Burma-Siam railway. Their instinct is to sabotage the bridge but, under the leadership of Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed as a symbol of British morale, spirit and dignity in adverse circumstances.

Movies the giraffe watched in 2016: August (30 movies items)

"First viewing - Aug. 27th Since I gave over my afternoon to one David Lean epic, I figured after dinner I'd let another one consume my night. This film largely succeeds thanks to the acting skills of Alec Guinness and William Holden as well as the arcs of the characters they portray. Granted the entire cast does a solid to excellent job throughout the film, but those two were the best reasons to hang with this movie. There's some great social commentary too, which fortunately isn't handled in a"

""At the following morning's assembly, Nicholson (Guinness) orders his officers to remain behind when the enlisted men are sent off to work. Saito slaps him across the face with his copy of the conventions and threatens to have them shot, but Nicholson refuses to back down. When Major Clipton (James Donald), the British medical officer, intervenes, Saito leaves the officers standing all day in the intense tropical heat. That evening, the officers are placed in a punishment hut, while Nicholson is"

" DVD- 2hrs. 42min. First Viewing A technical marvel, with a strong cast to boot, but The Bridge on the River Kwai goes on way too long and stretches itself way too thin. It's epic in scope, but could've benefited from a good trim here and there."
