Mustanaamio7's Movie Diary - Year 2011 (713 movies items)

"29.10. 2011 Today I got to see De Sica's most influential film at a movie theater and it is of course something that any self-respecting cinema fan should experience. "Bicycle Thieves" says the harsh truth about economically depressed post-war Rome: poor people have to steal from each other to survive. Although the message is very clear, it doesn't feel forced at all and it is naturally universal. The ending scene where the father ashames himself in the front of his son is one of the most memor"

Danny Boyle's Five Favorite Films (5 movies items)

"Danny Boyle : "To my everlasting shame -- the film is so good I hate to admit to it -- I never watched it until last Saturday because I was in Italy promoting Slumdog and they loved Slumdog and I felt abject because I hadn't seen The Bicycle Thief. Nobody asked about it but I ran out and got it the Saturday following. It's the most beautiful film. Do not be put off by the fact it's black and white or in Italian. It is the most beautiful film about a father and a son than I've ever seen." "

" Antonio Ricci is an unemployed man in the depressed post-World War II economy of Italy. With a wife and two children to support, he is desperate for work. He is delighted to at last get a good job pasting up posters, but he has to have a bicycle. He is told unequivocally, "No bicycle, no job." His wife Maria pawns their bedsheets in order to get money to redeem his bicycle from the pawnbroker. On his first day of work, Antonio's bicycle is stolen by a young thief.. ---------------------------"

My favourite Italian movies (22 movies items)

"Original Title: 'Ladri di biciclette' Directed by: Vittorio De Sica Plot: A man and his son search for a stolen bicycle vital for his job. Note: Probably the most famous neo-realist movie. The story is pretty simple but damned efficient. The combination of realism and symbolism is just great. An awesome classic. "

A great classic

“It is probably the most famous movie coming from the Italian neo-realist genre and since it is such a classic, I really had to watch it. The first thing that stroke me is how simple the story is. In my opinion, the combination of realism and symbolism was just great and the story was sometimes rather heartbreaking. Still, I guess it is an acquired taste and many modern viewers would get bored by this flick. Anyway, it remains an awesome classic, it i” read more
