You'd be forgiven for thinking that all the advertisements for The Artist make it look exclusively like a throwback. That, of course, would be a turn-off for someone who's never seen a silent black-and-white movie or for someone who's prejudiced against films like that because they expect the experience will be monotonous. Thankfully, this cinematic offering doesn't limit itself to just reproduc... read more

A masterpiece for the ages.

Considering that there was a rather unorthodox and unique idea behind it with a black and white silent film set in the 1920s being released in 2011, The Artist still provided us with the thought that it could become something that’ll renovate the birth of cinema, so to speak. With this in mind and having said that it is surrounded by all these colourful Hollywood dramas, action and science ficti... read more

George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a star of silent movies in Hollywood of the '20s but the arrival of talking cinema and the Great Depression changed the situation in the life of George, who sees his career to fade quickly, since the film industry falls rapidly in the era of "sound" and looks for new stars that will invest. One of them is the young and beautiful Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) which fr... read more

Movies I watched - February 2015 (18 movies items)

" Very cool and also risky concept, and in my opinion successful, the movie does indeed feel like a legitimate silent film from the era, wich only shows great derecting and acting, some people say that the movie sounds a bit pretentious in regards to its position on silent films, but then again my interpretation of the ending disproves this and i do believe it was kind of intentional, so overall an awesome movie and a breath of fresh air on a time time that needs it. Score: Awesome! "

If There Had Been 10 (10 movies items)

" There are really numerous movies that could go here. Bridesmaids was hot, A Seperation managed to crack the Original Screenplay category, The Ides of March had hung in all season, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy had a surprisingly strong showing. In the end though, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just had the momentum; it picked up nods at the DGA, WGA, SAG, and Editors Guild awards. Add the five nominations it got, and the key editing win, and it just looks too strong to beat. Likelihood of No"

If There Had Been 5 (8 movies items)

" The Artist, The Descendants and Hugo were massive locks, with Midnight in Paris looking pretty solid at #4. The fifth spot would've likely gone to either The Help or The Tree of Life, leading me to leaning toward the former. The Tree of Life just seemed liked a movie that more people respected than actually liked, accounting for Mallick's Best Director nomination. The Help went over big in the actor's branch and was the only box-office smash of the potential nominees, leading me to believe it "

A great tribute to silent film that I'm glad I saw

“This is the first mainstream silent film to come out in nearly 40 years since “Mel Brook’s Silent Movie”, which is ironic because that movie was about trying to make the first mainstream silent movie in 40 years. I felt that after watching his first endeavors as a director with the “OSS 117” films that it was appropriate to finish off this “Hazanavicius-a-thon” (?) with the first time viewing of his most recognized work to date. This guy has only three real films under his belt and I already think he has become one of my favorite new-coming directors. “The Artist” is definitely my favorite movie that he’s done. It is a very great movie. This movie is actually sort of similar to another movie that I love, “Hugo”, as both are movies that are about movies that you watc” read more

“I've become a fan of silent movies since watching TCM so I thoroughly enjoyed this, though I confess to being happily surprised by sound at the end.
