While tame for today's audiences, The Arrival of a Train at Station may have been the scariest movie ever made. Audiences viewing the film on original release in 1895 where so overwhelmed by the site of a life size training coming directly at them, they fled the the theater screaming in panic that the train was going to run them over.

Not the first movie ever, but considered the very first movie ever being shown to the public, by the Lumière brothers who were the pioneers in "making" movies. Their first movie is usually entitled "Workers Leaving the Factory" (filmed at the entrance of the brothers' factory itself).

A confusing cross between interesting and dull

Although the only thing that happens is a train comes into a station, it is only 50 seconds, although it is dull, it is also interesting as it is one of the first movies ever and is worth a look especially if you're interested in the first movies ever

A group of people are standing in a straight line along the platform of a railway station, waiting for a train, which is seen coming at some distance. When the train stops at the platform, the line dissolves. The doors of the railway-cars open, and people on the platform help passengers to get off.

Things I Dislike About Cinema (12 movies items)

"People who sincerely think that a film made in the 1990s or 1980s is an old movie The film is a young artform, compared to its big sisters. It has barely existed over 100 years. The oldest living person living now is just a few years younger than cinema (if you count The Arrival of a Train at Station as its official starting point). But, even then, what is old? For many people it seems that old is something which happened a year ago or even yesterday. Is it because of humanity's tendency to lo"

One Film Per Year: 1888-2011 (124 movies items)

"First film of real aesthetic interest on this list. The camera is stationary, but note how the Lumiere Brothers have already developed a sense for framing motion. One of the earliest projected films to be publicly exhibited. Apparently some members of the audience were a bit worried the train might run right through the screen.* *that may be an urban myth/Lumiere PR"

The World's First Horror Movie

“While tame for today's audiences, The Arrival of a Train at Station may have been the scariest movie ever made. Audiences viewing the film on original release in 1895 where so overwhelmed by the site of a life size training coming directly at them, they fled the the theater screaming in panic that the train was going to run them over.

The film's use of long, medium and close up shots help demonstrate this effect, but today's advanced 3-D technology makes it seem outdated.

Regardless, modern movie viewers should still still enjoy The Arrival of a Train, at Station and witness one of the earliest examples of the power of cinema.” read more
