"Now, then, ladies and gentlemen, do you see this gun? It fires 750 rounds of 9-millimeter ammunition per minute. In other words, if all of you simultaneously were to rush me, not a single one of you would get any closer than you are right now. I do hope I've made myself understood."

The type of gritty, ruthless thriller that could only emerge during the '70s, Joseph Sargent's class... read more

One of those super cool movies from yesterday. Matthau and Shaw are perfectly matched as adversaries who never see each other face to face until the final chapter. Movies like this aren't being made anymore. With it's sharp humor, snappy dialog and gritty action one can understand the influence this flick would have on future film makers like Quentin Tarantino.

Entertaining action/thriller

A remake has come in 2009, with John Travolta & Denzel Washinton, with about the same name. Before I'm gonna see the new version, I made sure I watched the old version, in case it's better, which older version of films (example: The Day the Earth Stood Still) usally am.

The movie got a great set of atmosphere, especially when you think of how they hijacked the train, why they do it ... read more

New York movies:The 100 best films set in New York (100 movies items)

"Transit cop Walter Matthau (wearing MTA cynicism like a badge of honor) has to stop a quartet of thieves holding a subway car of distinctly Noo Yawk passengers for ransom. This crackerjack action thriller pulses with ’70s-era sleaziness, from dank, dark train tunnels to David Shire’s pounding, jazzy musical score. —Keith Uhlich "

I Recommend...(The Short List) (80 movies items)

" Thriller. Stars Walter Matthau. Co-stars Jerry Stiller. Such a great, low-key movie. A group of men take a subway car hostage and Walter Matthau works to get them free. No big action moments, but entertaining all the way through. Has one of my favorite endings."

Muute"

"June 20 After making a mistake of watching the remake without even knowing it was a remake, I knew that I had to see the original. This was good as I expected it to be. This was a fun movie, while the remake was modernized, not very interesting and forgettable. "

" Monkey See - Monkey Rent #1 Movies the giraffe watched: May 2012 Yep, Mr G watched the film earlier this month and I had seen the remake so figured I would rent the original. The remake is instantly forgettable while the original is still the better film and will remain a classic for some time to come."

"First viewing - May 3rd Review by PvtCaboose91 I found myself captivated by this brilliant heist film that has clearly been a huge influence on the films that followed (most obviously Reservoir Dogs). I'd first heard of it thanks to a little song you may know from the Beastie Boys called "Sure Shot" & as fate would have it I watched it the day before Adam Yauch AKA MCA died of cancer. Just a little reminder that we're all more connected than we're often conscious of I think."

" Pretty damn good and a lot more humorous than I was expecting (the ending in particular is a hoot!) although they cheated by not explaining exactly how Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam and co were able to override the train's dead man's switch - all they seemed to do was to screw on a pole to the axis. Abracadabra (!). One critic (I forget who but we're talking Radio Times 'expert' here) observed that the passengers were such dreadful stereotypes that they deserved to perish. Bit harsh, but they w"
