This is not going to be a normal review. I will not make a list. I will not make a list of all the things bad, of all the things good, and all the things mediocre in this film. I will not give it a rating other than verbal. I will only talk about it. I will talk about why I think of it so important. Why I believe it to be among the greatest films of all time. This article will be a celebration of ... read more
The Charlie Kaufman is already notorious for the skill of the script by «Being John Malkovich», «Adaptation» and of course the «Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind». The mind-trapper sign here and of course the scenario with the difference that first puts himself in the director's chair. Leading a great cast perfectly and winning the top all-range interpretation Hoffman «Capote», the Ame... read more
Unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. When I walked out of the New York theater after I saw it the first time, I didn’t know what to think. I felt something, but I didn’t know what. My mind was focused on the burning house and the series of illnesses that Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) suffers. I thought about how clever it was to hide an event such as the burning house right under o... read more

His life catering to suburban blue-hairs at the local regional theater in Schenectady, New York is looking bleak. His wife has left him to pursue her painting in Berlin, taking their young daughter Olive with her. His therapist, Madeleine Gravis is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. A new relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel has prematurely run aground. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. Worried about the transience of his life, he leaves his home behind. He gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in New York City, hoping to create a work of brutal honesty. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a growing mockup of the city outside. The years rapidly fold into each other, and Caden buries himself deeper into his masterpiece. As he pushes the limits of his relationships, both personally and professionally, a change in creative direction arrives in Millicent Weems (Dianne Wiest), a celebrated theater actress who may offer Caden the break he needs.... " The brilliant Charlie Kaufman made his directorial debut with this film from 2008, in which Philip Seymour Hoffman is a playwright given a MacArthur genius grant, which he uses to move into a warehouse with a troupe of actors used as stand-ins for his own life. Things wildly unravel near the end, becoming increasingly dreamlike as actors switch roles and Hoffman gives up directing, joining the play himself. The play is his life and the life is his play, but does it matter? 'Synecdoche, "

"I will be dying and so will you, and so will everyone here. That's what I want to explore. We're all hurtling towards death, yet here we are for the moment, alive. Each of us knowing we're going to die, each of us secretly believing we won't.""

En ole kirjoitustuulella, mutta Kaufmanin käsis on jälleen kerran helvetin hyvä, näyttelijät tekevät hyvää työtä. Paikoitellen hauskaa, mutta suuremmaksi osaksi erittäin raskasta katsottavaa."

"I was constantly confused by the meta-worldly style of Synecdoche, New York, but I do know that I will be watching it again. It is complex, multi-layered, and usually rather weird. Charlie Kaufman's writing and directorial efforts really do triumph here, forming a twisting and turning story of much pain and remorse, challenging perspectives on the physical reality and existentialist disillusionment. Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives a truly excellent performance; his character's ever-present distres"

DIRECTED BY Charlie Kaufman
Ambitious as hell, it's about a theater director trying to explain life to himself by making his own life into a massive play. Eventually he finds himself living his own play.
A fascinating film that infiltrates your brain. It's very cynical and complex - at least it feels like it - and thus a bit of a hard film to watch. But the ending was memorable and weirdly touching.

“I've just watched it and I have very mixed feelings about it. I will try to find out if my understanding of the film is even relevant to the one that Kaufman had but I think this film's review should focus on the one and only reason to watch it which is irrelevant to anyone's taste or level of understanding of the meanings between the lines. Can't say it was bad, not at all, it was a brilliant piece of work..but I can't say a masterpiece either because I don't think it fits any profile to be honest. The briliant thing about it ,I think, is that it makes you think, question, look, wonder, love and hate..it makes you feel so deeply..it is a devastating movie, one of those films not to watch when in an awful mood. It doesn't make you feel one thing but a lot of things actually. And for this r” read more
