Being a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson, I eventually had to watch this movie. Eventually, I wasn't disappointed. There are some amazing shots here and the directing is pretty awesome, especialy when you think it was his directing debut. The cast is not composed of big stars but of some very good character actors who all deliver some amazing perfomances. I must say I was a little bit underwhelmed by t... read more

John has lost all his money. He sits outside a diner in the desert when Sydney happens along, buys him coffee, then takes him to Reno and shows him how to get a free room without losing much money. Under Sydney's fatherly tutelage, John becomes a successful small-time professional gambler, and all is well, until he falls for Clementine, a cocktail waitress and sometimes hooker.

30 From 96: My Favorite Films From 1996 (30 movies items)

"An aged small time gambler comes across a young hard luck case and takes him under his wing. A few years later, the protege has learned how to utilize certain "games of chance" to his advantage in order to enjoy a means of living on the Strip. That is, until a "darling Clementine" comes into his life who proves that "Lady Luck" she isn't. 1996 was the year when Paul Anderson came onto the Hollywood field with Hard Eight. Three years earlier, in 1993, he had made a short 20 minute film cal"
