Bright colours and music by Goblin make sure the mood stays chilling and possibly slightly bonkers, especially when the set design is almost surrealistic. The acting is average and the finale slightly unsatisfying but I hardly noticed any of it, I was completely mesmerized by the atmosphere. The use of colours along with cinematography in general were just brilliant. It felt like one big nightm... read more
Suspiria is an odd one, my initial reaction was that I pretty much hated it, or at the very least after reading about it for so long and after building up all these expectations and imaginings for what I thought the movie should be I was left thoroughly disappointed. That was a few years back and since then I have watched it a number of times and I have to say it has grown on me somewhat. My appre... read more

That was a few years back and since then I have watched it a number of times and I have to say it has grown on me somewhat. My appreciation for the cinematography and art direction has certainly bloomed, while some films would simply be swallowed by such heavy stylization Susperia is rather saved by it. "A young woman travels from the States to Germany so that she can enroll into a prestigious academy of dance. And soon finds that, instead of the graceful gallop of ballet, her instructors are more focused on the mystic moves that come from dancing with the devil.
No matter what decade of cinema it is, past or present, most movies that have a dark themed story-line about dark magic try to convey their dark feeling of darkness by monochromatically limiting the color schemes to one or two dar"

The Ups: Visually breathtaking with gorgeous use of it's sets. Extremely artistic with some of the most intense and memorable death sequences put on film. Jessica Harper behaving as a starlet in a silent movie production that just happen to have color and sound. Goblin's unique music.
The Downs: A few terrible supporting actresses and the English dub doesn't really ruin the impact all that much."
"...all the visual artistry in the world can't compensate for a lousy script.

"Mater Suspiriorum, The Mother of Sighs
Appearance
Wrinkly. By the time she turns up in Dario Argento’s high-tension horror masterpiece, The Mother of Sighs is a couple of centuries old, and looks it. According to star Jessica Harper, she was played by ‘a 90-year-old ex-hooker Dario found on the streets of Rome’.
Evil deeds
Killing innocent young ballet dancers in the most gruesomely inventive ways possible: her methods include stained glass, reanimated corpses and barbed wire.
