“It would be easy to simply dismiss Super as the cheap, indy cinema, not-very-cool, Kick Ass wannabe that it appears to be. Easy but incorrect. Super asks the viewer the same question as Batman, Watchmen and Kick Ass, "What would happen if regular people took it upon themselves to become masked heroes?" Despite this premise, even those three films allow for impossibly powerful characters. Just look at Batman's wealth, or "Blue Penis Guy's" powers, or even Hit Girl's fighting skills. Super only allows for a regular person to don the mask and tights, which takes the level of realism to places the viewer may not really want to go!

"It's too bad that Super isn't "super" in the way that last year's Kick-Ass was, indeed, "kick-ass." The only reprieve here is offered by Ellen Page, who is relentlessly funny. The rest of the film is a bad case of a movie having no idea what it wants to be or where it wants to go. Even worse, its drastically positive twist at the end is an absolute cheat. “Thank God for Ellen Page. If it weren't for her presence in SUPER (a film with virtually nothing "super" about it, aside from Page's uproarious supporting performance), the film would border on being terrible. But thanks to the fact that she was cast, this cinematic experience is slightly easier to endure, though I still struggle to recommend it.

If you're one of the people who saw last year's KICK-ASS and were put off by the film's "awkward" shifts in tone, you're in for some seriously worse disorientation with SUPER. You see, I absolutely adored KICK-ASS - yes, its tonality is a little wayward, but one thing we should understand is that it's FINE for a film to shift tones as long as it knows what the right MOMENTS are to do so. "Released in UK 08/07/11 20/08/11 - A bit of a cheat this entry as I watched at home on Blu-ray, missed the theatrical release as it was limited. A good indie movie, well that was the feel of it. The 1st third of the movie was a little slow but by the surprising action packed 3rd act I was hooked. A great example of non main stream non big budget movies can be. 7/10"
