Underrated masterpiece!

This film went beyond my expectations. Sophie's Choice is an inspiring, beautiful yet tragic story that has become a memorable film. It is quite gut retching because this film brought back the horror of the Holocaust. Regarding the Holocaust, it wasn't so much about death but about slavery in the Holocaust and about self-emotional torture. It is a story that can make people stand tall and stand ag... read more

Since it is one of the most highly regarded movies starring Meryl Streep (she even got an academy award for her performance), and I was really eager to watch this flick so I had some rather high expectations. A tale of tough choices in difficult times. Oscar winning Meryl Streep as a Polish woman who survived Auschwitz. But she has to bear heavy memories. Unforgettable performance.

Meryl Streep is a wonder as Sophie., writes critic Roger Ebert. There is hardly an emotion that Streep doesn't touch in this movie, and yet we're never aware of her straining. This is one of the most astonish... read more

Sophie is the survivor of Nazi concentration camps, who has found a reason to live in Nathan, a sparkling if unsteady American Jew obsessed with the Holocaust. They befriend Stingo, the movie's narrator, a young American writer new to New York City. But the happiness of Sophie and Nathan is endangered by her ghosts and his obsessions.

The Toughest Choice

“A tale of tough choices in difficult times.

This is one of the most astonishing and yet one of the most unaffected and natural performances I can imagine.

Kevin Kline's weird character's bit annoying, though, and the "American" storyline is a tad slow and too... American to my taste!

However, you may love it or not, but you will definitely remember this movie for a long time.” read more

Movies the giraffe watched: September 2012 (31 movies items)

"First viewing - Sept. 21st/22nd I had heard of this film a few times before, but odds are I wouldn't have watched it had it not been included among the films for this month. And while I'm glad I've finally seen it, it's not the sort of film I'd ever watch again. The acting is good (Meryl Streep's performance is definitely Oscar-worthy & thus well earned), the story is good, but I was never really swept away by it. That's not to say I wasn't engaged & entertained (I was), but I simply never felt"

" The film was about a Polish immigrant, Sophie, who was a survivor of Nazi concentration camps. Meryl put other actors and actresses to shame with her dedication for this particular role. She cut off her hair and lost 25 pounds specifically for a scene in Auschwitz. She also learned how to speak German fluently and learned a Polish accent."

Eventually, I had some rather mixed feelings about the whole thing. Indeed, I really had a hard time caring about the whole thing. Still, Meryl Streep was indeed really terrific and if only for her performance, you should definitely check this movie. On the other hand, I thought that Kevin Kline was rather annoying and, honestly, not really convincing. I know, he plays someone with some psychological issues but I thought he was way too hysterical and he got on my nerves pretty bad. Furthermore, I was wondering where the story was going during the whole thing until the shattering endin” read more

2012 Movie Diary - January (27 movies items)

"It's a tough one. On one hand, Meryl Streep is even more astonishing than usual and I am completely in awe of her performance (which gained her an Oscar and a Golden Globe, and I can certainly see why). On the other hand, it was a little boring until like, the last half hour and with it being so long, this is not a good thing. However, this last half hour did redeem it and it did live up to the devastating hype and I did cry. Hysterically."

"If you've never seen any of Meryl Streep's movies & have been wondering what all the hype is about her & her acting, this is the movie to check out. I only recently watched it for the first time, & find Mz. Streep's performance everything I had heard about it. One the best actresses to ever grace the silver screen at her best (and to be honest, judging from her most recent films, like The Devil Wears Prada, Julie & Julia, and Doubt, it's a streak of high level of quality acting that seems to st"
