DISNEY'S SONG OF THE SOUTH, which broke new ground in animation techniques, was one of the biggest box-office attractions in 1946. Based on Jocl Chandler Harris's Uncle Remus, this animation-action film features about a little boy Johnny learning about life through the Brer Rabbit stories of Uncle Remuss. SONG OF SOUTH's cartoon sequences are as fine as anything produced by the Disney animators.
The performance of James basket (Uncle Remus/ Voice of Brer Fox) makes the technique work all the better, as he interacts in a genuine manner with the cartoon characters, for which, he was awarded an honorary Oscar. The lively tone Zip-a Dee-Doo-Dah, penned by Allie wruble and Ray Gilbert won the Oscar for Best Song. Aside from it, there was also an Academy Award nomination for the musical score of this film. The other famous songs include:How Do You Do, Song of the South, Everybody Has a Laughing Place. The film was reissued in 1956,1972,1980 and 1986, which proved to be one long-lasting genuine charmer in the history of films.
