''The punishment is loneliness.''

After living a life marked by coldness, an aging professor is forced to confront the emptiness of his existence.

Victor Sjöström: Dr. Isak Borg

Ingmar Bergman has indeed done it yet again. Firstly the captivating Seventh Seal blew me away with it's masterful strokes of genius and layered themes of death; Now, Smul... read more

"If I have been feeling worried or sad during the day, I have a habit of recalling scenes from childhood to calm me. So it was this evening."

Wild Strawberries (also known by its foreign title Smultronstället) is a surreal, expressionistic creation from renowned Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. During 1957, Bergman directed two of his most celebrated masterpieces: The Seventh Seal ... read more

Old people are the joke of Hollywood. How often does one see sensitive, well rounded portrayals of elders? There was Simon Rumley's abstract indie "The Living and the Dead," with the beleaguered Roger Lloyd-Pack attempting to care for his sick wife and deranged son. There was "The Savages," "Before the Devil knows You're Dead." Or you could go back further, to Ingmar Bergman's 1957 art film "Wild ... read more

A classic

“Since this movie is a huge classic and is very often considered as one of the best movies directed by Ingmar Bergman, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Well, to be honest, as usual with this director, I had a rather hard time to connect with the damned thing. It didn't help that I saw a very poor version on YouTube so maybe I should give it another chance in the future. Still, the fact that I didn't connect with this movie was probably because I'm not smart enough and not because it wasn't a good movie, that's for sure. Eventually, often with Bergman's work, I enjoyed more thinking afterwards about his movies than actually watching them and this one was a perfect example. First of all, even though our Western world is getting older and older, we st” read more

" Interesting reflection and discussion about religion, people and life itself by the man who can deliver these kind of dialogue, Ingmar Bergman. Fantastic story that use flashbacks and dreams to tell about a life in retrospective. It is also light and endearing with Victor Sjöstrom being charming in the leading role. "

""Cinema is most often analogized with dreaming (see Hollywood as “dream factory”), but it is also a kind of remembering: it manufactures an immediate past, and thus makes us retrospectively and prospectively older. Bergman’s Wild Strawberries starts with a dream and ends with a memory, aligning its beauty with the beauty of its seventy-seven-year-old star, the great Swedish actor and director Victor Sjöström." - James Schamus"
