As Ray Porter watches Mirabelle walk away he feels a loss. How is it possible, he thinks, to miss a woman whom he kept at a distance so that when she was gone he would not miss her. Only then does he realize that wanting part of her and not all of her had hurt them both and how he cannot justify his actions except that... well... it was life.

A pretty good movie

I think it was pretty good. There is definitely nothing revolutionary about it but I still liked it. It was especially refreshing to see Steve Martin playing an introvert character instead of the usual hysterical figure he usually portrays. The movie was just charming and really appealed to me. Definitely worth a look.

"The cinematography (lighting, color, angle, symbolism, and frame construction) of this film is absolutely beautiful! I don't understand why this has a 5.8 rating. The story was sometimes tender, sometimes hilarious. Though the ending of the romance was not exactly preferrable, it is realistic. I found the exploration of the themes of romance, protection, female needs, and possession deep, the work of a man who has experienced this side of life. Great script, fantastic movie!"

"Steve Martin's script is smart and full of wisdom - but it still have some Martin -craziness like eating McDonald fries with chopsticks. If you are or have been in love you know exactly what this movie is about. Damn good movie."
