James Stewart as cute and adorable as always (perhaps a lil more grumpy) and some funny situations. The script skips the main characters conflict nearly altogether but I guess that´s the way the movies were made back then.

Lubitsch's charming and gentle romance, set in Budapest. Klara Novak and Alfred Kralik have fallen in love -- but if they were to pass each other on the street, they wouldn't know: they've met only as pen-pals, and haven't even signed the letters with their real names. So when Klara applies for a job in the shop where Alfred works as head clerk, he turns her down cold... until his boss overrules the decision and takes Klara on. As the two continue their loving correspondence, they embark on a combative personal relationship. Will the hostilities cease when the truth comes to light? Or will their hopes for romance be destroyed forever?
Though James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan also starred together in NEXT TIME WE LOVE, THE MORTAL STORM, and THE SHOPWORN ANGEL, their best pairing is this classic romance directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Here the stars play two sales clerks in a Budapest shop who dislike each other, but inadvertently fall in love while corresponding as pseudonymous pen pals.THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER was later remade as the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan romantic comedy YOU'VE GOT MAIL, but it's hard to compare to the beauty and simplicity of the original.

A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man. - A Simpsons episode
I was hesitant to watch this because one of my least favorite movies, You've Got Mail, was adapted from the same story. This film is great because of Jimmy Stewart and the Lubitsch touch. I was feeling kind of cynical, but the theme about really knowing and appreciating people made me happy. This is one of my favorite Christmas films.
